Book Review: 25 years later, my daughter can recite the text verbatim

I purchased this book a quarter-century ago when first broaching the subject of using the potty with my elder daughter. To this day, I can still hear her giggles and "Nooooooooo" when I'd ask "Is it a hat?" "Is it a food bowl for the cat?" followed by her delighted squeal of "IT'S A POTTY!" At about 18 months, she had memorized all the text and loved this book as much, if not more, than any other. Her younger sister, fastidious from birth, potty-trained herself in one day at 13 months of age - and whether this book played a role, I don't know. She certainly heard it read by me and recited from memory by her sister countless times. The moment my elder daughter learned her "Baby Sister" was going to make her an aunt, the first thing she said to me was "We can buy the baby ONCE UPON A POTTY!" My daughters and little granddaughters have always had well-stocked libraries, with many books read and soon forgotten, but this one has cherished memories attached to it and has become a family tradition. I've given this book to other little ones over the years who were approaching potty-training age, as well, and they delight in being in on the "secret" that the chamber pot is none of the other creative possibilities suggested. Whether it inspires them to use the potty sooner than they might otherwise, who knows? But, it does tickle them - and I think it's a perfect, low-key, entertaining way to take the first step on the path to being diaper-free.
