Book Reviews of One Fifth AvenueBook Review: I felt sad when I finished it! Summary: 5 Stars
I read this in 2 days while lying on a beach and really enjoyed it. The Lola character is hilarious ( we all know a Lola) and so are James and Mindy (who we also know!) There is a focus on Greed, Real Estate, New York Society and Fame. It's all very topical given the recent Finacial Crisis on Wall Street. Enjoy!
Book Review: It's the One. Summary: 4 Stars
Actually, it's the one I was able to read all the way through. CB owes her career as a book author to television and the producers and screenwriters that can make her look better than she is. SATC the book was dreadful, yet it was spun into gold by people who took her stories and characters and turned them into something. I made it to Chapter 3 of Lipstick Jungle before I asked myself why I was torturing myself, yet the show is a hit. In One Fifth, the characters are pretty good and their stories are fun to read, if not cliched. The writing is pedantic, but I envision the TV show that's sure to follow, a star studded success due to the aforementioned producers and screenwriters who will turn it into the next Hotel/Love Boat.
Book Review: Just Plain Miserable Summary: 1 Stars
I had read so many positive reviews about One Fifth and how it was a light, fun, and witty read from the woman who created Sex and the City. I was extremely excited when the book arrived and eagerly started reading it. After slogging through about 165 pages, I had to put the book down. There were too many characters and too little plot to keep the novel cohesive and moving forward. To make matters worse, every single character wasn't just self-absorbed and greedy (as other reviewers have noted), but they were so miserable!! I've had many experiences while reading. Books have made me laugh and cry--always within the context of the story. This is the first book that made me depressed about the world in general! The author makes life, especially middle-aged life, seem bleak, pointless, and filled with nothing but unhappiness. This is not the light and fluffy book I expected. Wealthy New Yorkers whining incessantly about how awful it is to be rich just wasn't my cup of tea.
Book Review: Life is too short Summary: 1 Stars
to waste time listening to the rest of this book. I found the characters unbelievable and unable to hold my interest. I am a former New Yorker and had a sister caught up in the status issues raised in this book. This is not realistic and is very boring.
As a side note, if the author states that a character laughed, it is NOT necessary for the narrator to "hehehe" after reading the line!
Book Review: Like porn, pointless, but you cannot put it down Summary: 4 Stars
As usual, Bushnell writes about a most eclectic group of people, all money hungry, selfish, greedy, promiscuous and never satisfied with what they have. The most normal character in the book was an adolescent boy. Everybody has more money than they know what to do with it, but never enough. I was both appalled and entranced. It was like reading porn. Is utterly pointless, but you cannot put it down. You have two men that think with their lower body organs instead of their actual head, a woman that will sleep with whomever to live in a particular building, an actress that is weary of lying in the bed she made, a mom with a married life very similiar to the rest of us folks, an old busy body, and of course, a possibly gay fellow. And let us not forget the filthy rich and high and mighty upstairs. This book follows their lives and it is shocking how their choices and situations entwine. I could not put it down. Bushnell somehow does it again. There is quite possibly a moral in this novel. "Treat others as you would like to be treated.." OR "Be nice to a fellow today cause he may be your boss tomorrow." One never knows who will rise above or fall below. You may be pleasantly surprised.
