Book Review: obscure early authors

If you are a science fiction fan, you are probably well acquainted with the early science fiction of the 19th century. H G Wells, Jules Verne and Mary Shelley. But Alkon has delved further into the antecedants. Finding obscure authors who contributed in their own ways and perhaps deserve some belated recognition.
Above all, Jacques Guttin, who wrote Epigone in 1659. Alkon analyses this at some length. Guttin set his novel in a fictional future, so that he could extrapolate some aspects of his present day society and use these as plot devices.
Other equally obscure writers are studied. As a long time science fiction fan, I'm fairly well acquainted with the big names. But I'd never heard of any of these. Why are they so obscure? Alkon suggests that for some of them, the quality of writing was never compelling, aside from any historical significance of their works.
