Book Review: A Great Coming Of Age Story!
Summary: 4 Stars
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. As first novels go, this is one of the better ones. It's not perfect however. The books is slightly marred by a bit too much convenient "hero-at-the-right-place-at-precisely-the-right-time" plotting and there is a strange interpretation of military protocol. But these are minor quibbles though they cost the book a star.
Buettner's tale of alien invasion struck me as very original with its depiction of the event happening in the very near future where humans are caught without a space program to speak of, cobbling together an attack force to attack the alien stronghold on Ganymede. The comparisons to Heinlein are obvious but, hey, Robert A. created the genre after all.
The book may require quite a bit of suspension of disbelief, but the characters are captivating and the action, when it gets going, is stellar. This is not a simple outer space romp. In fact, some readers expecting such a tale will be disappointed as the action doesn't kick in full-throttle until the last 80 pages of the book. It's the characters that keep you turning the pages in the early going. Oh, they come across as a little pat, but they win you over and you begin to care about them. This makes the action all the more intense. Buettner puts you on Ganymede. You feel the alien atmosphere and surroundings.
The novel ends stronger than it begins and there's nothing wrong with that. It certainly got me interested to read the next book, which fortunately I have on hand.
I recommend ORPHANAGE not only to fans of military sci-fi, but to anyone who enjoys a well-told story.
