Book Reviews of Other Side of the Pain

Book Review: Amazing because it covers so many issues!
Summary: 4 Stars

Have you ever loved a niche-market film or independent film even though it had low-budget production values? This book is the same way. The photos included were crummy reprints that someone could do at their local library. The printed text looks like it was done on anyone's home computer. My mother had a student who was upset when my mother wrote that "a bazaar moment" was a misspelling. This book has lots of typos where words by themselves are true spellings, but the grammar, hyphenation, clich'es, etc. are terribly out of place.

Low-budgety-ness aside, this was a good book. It reads quickly. Mrs. DeBarge neither confirms nor denies that Janet Jackson may have bore her a grandchild. She speaks about domestic violence, incarceration, breast cancer, R&B music, sibling rivalry, interracial marriage before the "Loving" decision, drugs, death, HIV, and so much more. It takes a strong woman to see so much in her life. So many readers, especially in Black America, will relate to some of the issues here.

This book was very churchy. If you like the religiosity of Tyler Perry's works, then you will like it here. The big shocker is that she discusses DeBarge's career in about four pages. The book focuses the family's abusive father and the terrible downturn for most of the children once fame had passed them by. Do you know how George Takei and Nichelle Richards of "Star Trek" have terrible things to say about William Shatner? Well, Mrs. DeBarge says nothing good about Motown's Berry Gordy.

At first, I had no intention of keeping this book. By the last page, I changed my mind completely. This book is filled with so much that I find valuable. I can't wait until Bunny DeBarge publishes her autobiography. I applaud Mrs. DeBarge, an older, African-American woman, for having the bravery to produce this reflective and informative text.
