Book Review: ...like a door barely ajar...

This is a novel out of Norway, translated by Anne Born. She deserves recognition since the most remarkable achievement of this fine book is its language. The book is close to being a fictional memoir. The 67 year old narrator, Trond, has just moved and is now living alone and isolated on a property that was deemed unacceptable to prospective buyers because of its poor condition. Yet the house rests in a remarkably bountiful natural setting. The story inter-cuts his memories of many people long gone with Trond's current adjustment to living alone an unable to connect or ask questions he fears hearing answered. The story focuses on surprise of loss, the acceptance of loss, and the personal creation and acceptance (or lack of) of loss. Without going into the detail of the story and spoiling it for you I did wonder if Trond's treatment of his daughter during her visit, or his relationship with his mother was not a direct result of his father's decisions. I loved the language such as this, "...and I thought about how it must feel to lose your life so early. Lose your life, as if you held an egg in your hand, and then dropped it, and it fell to the ground and broke, and I knew it could not feel like anything at all. If you were dead, you were dead, but in the fraction of a second just before; whether you realized then it was the end, and what that felt like. There was a narrow opening there, like a door barely ajar...". Much of a review is an expression of the emotion of the reviewer and although I admired the book and found much to admire I never really felt I connected to Trond or understood his relationship with his Father on any emotional level. The book has received nothing but rave reviews, 2007 New York Times Best Book and all. But for me it was a very well written but bit to subtle narrative by a character that just let the river run through it. I recommend the book with just a few reservations.
