Book Review: A jarring life transition...

The only child of a widowed mother, eight-year-old John McMillan has always been rather protected. Despite being an intelligent boy, advanced for his age in book studies, John has a great deal to learn when it comes to the real world - the world his mother's always tried to shelter him from.
So it's a huge shock when John's mother dies, forcing her sister Nelda and her family to take young John in. Not only do Nelda, her husband Luther, and their children, Little Luther and Shell, live quite a distance from the Alabama town in which John was raised, but they live in abject poverty, scrabbling at farmwork wherever they can.
Worst of all, Uncle Luther is an abusive alcoholic whose family lives in terror of him. It doesn't take long before John learns the exact same things his extended family has known for years.
Luckily, a chance encounter puts John into the lives of the Vances, a wealthy and influential couple. While they quickly begin to care about the boy, they also realize his uncle is a dangerous force.
At the same time, John's eyes are beginning to open to the world of blacks in his 1950s community. Judge Vance's right-hand man, Tuway, a mysterious black man with both physical and emotional strength, eventually leads John to a whole other life, one he could never have imagined.
The character of John McMillan, first debuted in Devoto's premiere novel "My Last Days as Roy Rogers," continues in this rich work of historical fiction, growing in complexity and intriguing readers, along with those of his extended family, the Vances, and various community members.
