Book Reviews of Outlander

Book Review: A Bit Fantastic.
Summary: 4 Stars

A fast-paced, adventure filled romance. Wonderful details of life in Scotland in the 1700's. Like most romances, the hero is perfect, leaning towards deity, but the heroine is full of flaws that bring a reality to the story that will help the realist reader. My one complaint is that the trials faced, that are all eventually overcome, border on the unbelievable. This was disappointing as the historical details feel very accurate and I believe more realistic adventure would have given the book a better consistency. One warning - the descriptions of torture are very graphic. If you are looking for a lighthearted romance, look elsewhere.

Book Review: A Fun Read, It Keeps the Pages Turning
Summary: 4 Stars

The Outlander series came highly recommended from a friend, so I decided to give the first book in the series--"Outlander"--a try. I'm not usually a fan of romance novels or sci-fi (yeah the time traveling thing is a little sci-fi) but I was pleasantly surprised by the book.

Outlander's heroine Clare is smart and punchy, and her WWII era girl in 18th century Scotland is a fun mix. The book reads pretty fast, with lots of plots twists and turns, which is essential to keep you reading through a book this long! At times Outlander gets a little Outlandish--I mean how many times can people really be on death's door and still escape--but it was fun reading throughout. The book does stretch history a bit, but it still has a historical flair that makes for lively reading. When I reached Outlander's inevitable cliff hanger ending (I knew there were several more books in the series), I was ready to move onto to the next book in the series--but sadly I don't have two weeks to devote to reading it right now.

I would recommend this books to fans of historical romance/fiction--fans of Phillipa Gregory's books are likely to like this series too. Outlander is fun, light, page turning reading.

Book Review: A GREAT ADVENTURE!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

After reading Into the Wilderness by Sara Donati and liking it. I wondered who Diana Gabaldon was, since she had written a small review on the cover. I do not read that many romantic novels but I thought I would give this one a try. This book was great! I have read MANY books but this one will go to the top of my most memorable books. I am now half way done with Dragonfly in Amber. I bought it an hour after I finished Outlander(I could'nt wait to see what would happen next). I agree with other reviews that say this book should not be in the Romance section. I think some people will not buy them for that reason alone. Looking forward to reading the rest!!!

Book Review: A Great read, adventure, magic, romance, history.
Summary: 5 Stars

This is one of those books that makes my kids wonder about me. I guess there is nothing more embarrasing than having a "soccer mom" snickering while she reads a book by the sidelines of the practice field. This book had me laughing out load and wiping my eyes. What a great summer escape to the Scottish Highlands. The characters of Jamie and Claire, Frank and Jack are fleshed out in amazingly rich detail and color.

Book Review: A Lot of History to "Bog" Down a Great Read...
Summary: 3 Stars

I'm just starting on the third book in this series - and while this first book is "good enough", there's just way too much history involved in the whole series for me to really enjoy it. I appreciate the need for historical references, as the whole book is dependent upon it, up to a point. But many of the references are too deep and involved, and slow the books down. I'm glad I started reading them, and will most likely continue on to the end of the series - but if history (old England/Scottish Highland clans/Prince Charles Stuart/war strategies, etc.) aren't quite your thing, then you may not want to even begin on these books.
