Book Reviews of OutlanderBook Review: Absolutely the most fascinating fiction I have ever read. Summary: 5 Stars
I can`t recommend Diana`s Outlander series highly enough! I have been reading her books over and over for years and even travelled to Scotland to visit Culloden battlefield, a truly moving place! I can rightfully say that Diana has enriched my life by creating such lovable, complex characters like Jamie, Claire, John Grey,. etc. and by setting them against such an historically interesting ,and very tragic, background.Diana has a true understanding of human nature and a fine sense of humour, and we can all learn from her in many ways. Thanks, Diana!
Book Review: Abuse is sickening, not sexy. Summary: 1 Stars
As a history buff, genealogist and anglophile, I thought the best-selling "Outlander" series by Diana Gabledon would be the perfect brain-candy for my bedtime reading. Au contraire. Three hundred pages into the first book the hero we've come to love (and lust after) beats his wife for disobedience. I almost threw up on one of the Public Library's most popular reads. Granted, the novel takes place in 1743. Women were property at that time, as they still are in too many places today. However, I believe that it is completely unnecessary for a modern American author to portray violence against women as acceptable behavior for a protagonist.
Diana Gabaldon - you have ruined my enjoyment of your otherwise engaging novel by making domestic violence seem acceptable. Shame on you.
Book Review: Addictive beyond belief Summary: 5 Stars
A co-worker gave me this book over a year ago and suggested I might enjoy it. Frankly, I was put off by the number of pages and, in all honesty, the topic. "Time-travelling romance? Seriously?" Eventually, if only to get the co-worker off my back ("No, seriously, you'll love it!") I picked the massive tome up... and immediately fell in love.
No one was more shocked than me.
Simply put, this is one of the most entertaining books I've ever read. By the time I'd read the first 100 pages, I had purchaed all the remaining books in the series. I look forward to spending many, many nights enjoying the adventures of Claire and Jamie Fraser.
For those who've heard of the books and wondered if they can possibly be as good as you're told by Gabaldon's almost fanatical readers, let me assure you that they (and as of now, I suppose I should include myself in that mix) are not exaggerating. Not one bit.
Book Review: Addictive! A must read! Summary: 5 Stars
This is the first book in a great series. If you are a fan of romance, historical fiction, adventure, and great, long books, this is your book. It takes about 100 pages or so to get into it. Highly recommend it! Claire and Jamie are great characters. Time travel is part of this book, but it is more a literary tool than a thematic part of the book. Diana Gabaldon is a great storyteller. She brings every detail alive. I have never been addicted to a book and a series as I have this one. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have!
Book Review: Adore this book, don't want a movie Summary: 5 Stars
What can I say about this book that hasn't been said by over a thousand other people? Like some, I heard mention of this book and how good it was, so when I came across it at the bookstore, I picked it up and went home and put it on my bookshelf. I think it sat there for months before I finally picked it up and decided to read it. I don't know what took me so long to read it. The first 50 or so pages didn't really lure me in as much as the rest of the book did. Once I got a couple chapters in, I knew I was addicted.
Sure, some (okay, a lot) of the scenes are quite graphic. And the big horribly graphic scene at the prison, I had to put the book down a couple times and do something else knowing what was coming and I just didn't want to read it. It was painful to get through, but I did it and moved on.
The love between Jamie and Claire sometimes brought tears to my eyes and I can only hope that I find my match as Claire did. And I know this may sound weird, but I loved it when they fought (minus when he beat her the one time). Their fights were so intense, but you could see they were filled with passion and it brought them closer to each other each time.
After finishing the first book, I immediately picked up the second one in the series. Since then, however, due to the seriousness and heaviness, I found that in between books, I had to pick up a light hearted book to bring me back down before picking up the next one. In fact, I think I've been ruined for other time travel romances after reading this series because I just read A Knight in Shining Armor and found myself comparing it to Jamie and Claire. I have just started the 4th book in the series today and am already not looking forward to reading the 6th book knowing the 7th isn't coming out until next year.
For those who are looking forward to a movie, I'm not so much. I would much rather read this book 10 times than see the movie and have it ruin all the scenes I have seen in my head and I don't think any actor could live up to the Jamie I've created in my mind. I'm happy with the book.
