Book Reviews of OutlanderBook Review: "love" in the dark ages Summary: 1 Stars
I was enjoying this book very much until the beating began. I understand that this novel is historically acurate, and that men beat their wives in the past and today. However, I do not believe that true love includes physical violence-- especially the sadistic sort. Although this was 250 years ago, domestic violence is still wrong! I read up until this part, got sick to my stomach and threw this book where it belongs- the dumpster.
Book Review: "you're reading that again?! Summary: 5 Stars
My husband says that every time I pick up Outlander. This series is the only series I've ever bought, first in paperback and then in hardbound when the paperbacks wore out. I never tire of the dialogue. It's realistic and yet desriptive. But I think it is the details of Claire's experiences that makes the books seem alive and new to me every time I read them.
Book Review: 'TIS THE TELLING OF IT THAT MAKES SUCH A BONNIE GOOD TALE! Summary: 5 Stars
Because someone recommended OUTLANDER on Amazon, I decided to order the book (the other books this person had recommended were some of my favorites so I figured we had the same tastes). I had no idea what this novel was about. During the beginning of the book I thought, "Hmmm, this is going to be a science fiction book. And then, as I read about the handsome highlander and the strong-willed Englishwoman, I thought well, maybe this is a romance. Next I decided that since every page exploded with activity, OUTLANDER must be an adventure book! What about all 18th century Scottish history? Is it a historical novel? I still don't know how to classify this 850 page saga--I do know that I just finished one of the finest books I have read in a long time!!! Oh, and please use all the above adjectives to describe this book. My first suggestion upon reading this book is go to the Internet and read some of the succinct selections on "Bonnie Prince Charlie." I wish I had done it before the reading of this novel rather than after! Once I started reading I didn't want to put OUTLANDER down to do any exploration. If you are like me, you will spend every spare second you have reading this book. I think Diana Gabaldon is a genius to write such a compelling and well-researched story. Her character development is absolutely phenomenal. I became so immersed in this stunning love story that I really became depressed towards the end of the book--thinking that Jamie was going to die and Claire would return to the 20th century (didn't Gabaldon foreshadow this?). Thankfully, the ending was wonderful. My favorite line in the entire novel is found on page 331, "Does it ever stop Claire, the wanting?" Wouldn't it be wonderful to be loved that much (especially by someone as pure, good and handsome as Jamie Fraser!)?
Book Review: ***** beautifully crafted series ***** Summary: 5 Stars
Every devoted reader has a small selection of books they'll NEVER EVER forget. The ones you connect with in a special way and continue to linger.
This beautifully crafted series - starting with Outlander (aka) Cross Stitch - by Diana Gabaldon, will forever remain with me. It was an absolute pleasure to read.
Just a small note of advice tho ...... If you are wise enough to read this book, be ready for the rest ..... once you start, it's impossible to stop.
Sure, some of the following books like 'The Fiery Cross' & 'A Breath of Snow & Ashes' are quite substantial sized books, but when your inside the story, each page turn goes unnoticed. If anything, you'll be sorry to see the end. Realizing this AFTER I read Outlander/Cross stitch, I made sure I had every book on hand, so withdrawal symptoms remained at a minimum. (Until now as I have just finished ABOS&A)
Buy it or loan it ..... either way ....... READ IT.
You'll be glad you did.
Book Review: ***** Outlander is Unmatched! ***** almost ;) lots of sequels :) Summary: 5 Stars
Swept away, back in time, the author does not hold back as she captures the 1700's in great detail, the way they were. She doesn't sugar coat it. There is cruelty. There is violence. Amongst it all there is love, deep love. It was a bit longer than I traditionally like; however, you can't please everybody ;). The author writes in great deail, HUGE detail! lol Just the same, there are certain parts in which you can't put the book down, you just can't. You have to know what happens next, even if it's bedtime and you have to tape your eyes open to read it ;)
Gabaldon talks about witchcraft and shows us how easy it was for people to label something or someone as witchcraft just because they didn't understand it. Makes you wonder, if we don't still do a little of that today. After all with all this reinvented law of attraction stuff, why not? I can quite imagine being in the 18th century and just talking about the law of attraction, let alone using it. I'm sure I too would have been labeled a witch and burned at the stake... anyhoo. Diana Gabaldon has a way with words and you can envision yourself in the characters shoes! The ride she takes you on is quite amazing. It's almost uncomparable!
Gabaldon is definately a one-of-a-kind writer. I have never read anything from her peers that can even compare, or in fact that is even written in the first person.
