Book Reviews of OutlanderBook Review: ***I'm hooked*** Summary: 5 Stars
This book came strongly recommended to me, but I must say that it was a struggle during the first 300 pages and I nearly gave up. DG is a new author for me and it took awhile to feel comfortable with the tempo and the detail of her writing style. The historical setting seems to be well researched and the plot is intriguing. She totally immerses the reader in the characters, the time period, and the customs/language of people. When Jamie and his clansmen speak, it is in their Scottish burr which is charming, but in the beginning it is difficult to read the dialect. There are parts that move slowly and sometimes I had to go back to re-read a part. The last half of this book made the struggle that I had with the first half all worth while. Wow! what an amazing story!
The relationship between Claire and Jamie develops gradually, but by the end of the book the reader actually knows them as very dear friends. They go through so many struggles and encounter so much danger. I have read few romance novels that have described the depth of love as greatly as this one! Oh, my...some of the amazing things that Jamie says to Claire...they should be inscribed in stone. And Claire, what a brave and devoted woman she is to stare danger in the face and save Jamie. What powerful passion they share!
You will be well rewarded if you finish this book. DG has gained another fan and now, I'm on to the next one, Dragonfly in Amber.
Book Review: **4 STARS**Not your typical romance novel... Summary: 4 Stars
Outlander differs from the usual romance novel fodder...
1. It's told from the 1st person
2. Claire, the heroine, is actually older than the hero, Jamie.
3. *Spoiler* Claire is not a virgin and Jamie is!!!
Outlander is the 1st in a series, but the novel itself stands alone. As far as romance writing goes, it's pretty good. Galbadon has a unique voice in comparison to other authors in the market. Her prose is much more sophisticated, characters-more thoughtful and plot-more surpirsing if not a wee bit outlandish at times.
Most romance novels are too idealistic for my taste, but Outlander is raw and may offend at times, and although certain plot points are unrealistic(time travel) the charater relationships between men and women and the situations-perverse sex and torture, are more true to the times than any other romance novel's.
Outlander is the "Deadwood" of the romance world.
Book Review: ... And I'm not even DONE with the book yet! Summary: 5 Stars
I do not read these kinds of "chick" books. At least I didn't. I can't believe that I can't put this book down! I laugh out loud at this book, and get mad at it, and fall in love with it... (and need I mention Jamie?) My mom gave me this book to read, too. And I wish I could have seen the look on her face when she read some of the steamier parts!! hahahahahaha
Book Review: ...And I don't even LIKE "romance" novels!... Summary: 5 Stars
I put off reading this book, even though it was highly recommended by a friend. I didn't have the heart to tell her that "romance novels" weren't my cup of tea- never mind some far-fetched paranormal historical romance. I could have not been more wrong!I loved this book. I mean, I REALLY loved this book. It was absolutely packed with adventure, passion, thievery, witchcraft, heart-stopping suspense, love, war, escape, buggery, revenge, even some wolves were in there for good measure! Diana writes with spirited intelligence, heart, and humour. Her charcaters are full of life and will live on long after you close the cover, and pop it back onto the shelf, and to my delight, the love scenes are written with imagination and freshness- no ridiculous "he touched her quivering milky bosoms" here. The research for factual information in this superb novel is first-rate, and meticulous, which makes this book an even greater pleasure to read. If you are someone who prefers to read literary fiction over any other genres, as I do, all I can say to you is PUT YOUR PREJUDICES ASIDE AND TRY THIS BOOK. I'm sorry I didn't read it sooner! It truly is the work of an excellent, and extremely talented storyteller and writer, all my "book snob" friends will be getting a copy for Christmas, and I can't wait to dig into the others in the series!
Book Review: 02/04/96 Summary: 5 Stars
This book is an amazing tale of love. The story draws
you in and makes you unable to put this book down. It is a love story
that endures over centuries. All in all, this is a wonderful book
if you are looking for a story to lose yourself in. Diana Gabaldon
has an excellent talent for details and makes the story quite
believable.
