Book Reviews of Papa John: An AutobiographyBook Review: Decent 60's Rock book Summary: 4 Stars
This guy was really flaky. Of course, it didn't help coming from such a dysfunctional family. A great read although it gets tedious around the early 1980's. Phillips was a great talent but also a major screw up. It's a wonder he made it past 60.
Book Review: Honest and rich , a slice of a time Summary: 5 Stars
You will enjoy this if you dig unflichingly honest accounts of the dirty side of sex, drugs, rock and roll. This guy was hugely talented, extremely lucky , and a beast in terms of consumption. I read this book years ago and really enjoyed it- I love reading about the lowest depths this guys sunk to- he had a every sophisticated ingenius set-up in the pharmacy I recall. Equally exciting was the story of the origins of the Mamas and the Papas- in a sunshiney California world that will never be repeated. If pop music history is your bag, you won't want to miss this unique slice of history.
Book Review: Stay away from this one Summary: 1 Stars
I wasn't even born when this group was popular but knew the music from my parents. Got this book a few weeks ago and it wasn't anything like I thought it would be. The group was only together a few years and this tells the story of his whole life. Other then the years where the group was together the rest of the book lacks a lot, unless you like to hear about drug use. Seems like 75% of the book centers around drug use and in great detail. Maybe it was my mistake to think that the book would be more about the group. Seems like he talked more about his 3rd wife more then Michelle who was in the group with him. Just not enough about the group. When Mama Cass dies he mentions the whole thing on 1 page and that's it then right back to his drug use stories. He gets into more detail about every drug he used more then every song he sang. Was painful to read after the he gets past the early 70's.
Book Review: This book is one of the best I have ever read Summary: 5 Stars
I heard about PAPA JOHN on the Howard Stern show many times...
I finally went to purchase it and ended up getting a used hard cover from Amazon for about $8 with shipping.
The book itself is hard to put down, a true page turner...
John Phillips, what a life this guy has lead, the honesty in the book
shocks me..and gives great insights to his life from before his birth to the rise of his stardom and his desent into drug abuse and back all the while decribing the people and places he experiences.
Book Review: Uh, no. Summary: 2 Stars
I like my rock bios as much as the next guy, but this one was torture. Halfway through it I realized that I could have cared less about the subjects at hand, John Phillips, the Mamas & Papas, who slept with Michelle, which arm he shot which drug into, etc., and vowed to be more selective in the future when seeking out my books. Not even one for the beach.
