The book is ostensibly about the behaviour of American parents, but the phenomena described by author Pamela Paul can be seen anywhere. She documents rocketing expenditures on young children in the last ten years, then argues that these are largely unjustified, and that children may even be harmed by some of the items being purchased.
The discussion of the origins of recent parental mania is particularly interesting ("you are spending $500 on that pair of shoes, how can you spend only $300 on the stroller for your child?" or "other parents have purchased an academic training program for their 13 month old tot; if your child falls behind at this early date, will he ever catch up?" et al.)
