Book Review: A much-needed political alternative to gay-leftist hegemony

This book is a powerful, comprehensive alternative to the gay-liberationist political victim-obsessed, one-size-fit-all, identity-politics mantra and its Stonewall mythology. And it adds some much-needed inspiration, hope, real-politic, human and spiritual dimensions to the perspectives of cerebral, grumpy gay libertarians (like me). While I virtually worship Andrew Sullivan's eloquent and clarifying works, such as Virtually Normal, Rich fills in much that is missing in the expanding ideological sphere being staked out for gays who are independent thinkers and politically moderate or right-of-center. Rich is writing from the front lines and about the real world of politics and his daily interactions and engagement with activists from the theocratic right to the far left gay hegemony. Yet, he gives it transcendent meaning. Like parables, his personal stories about others and the recounting of his own experiences are powerful illustrations of moral attitudes and political and spiritual principles which independent-thinking gays need to guide their vision of equal rights--no more, no less--for gays. This is a blueprint for political diversity in the gay community. Free at last!
