Book Reviews of PassionBook Review: At first I hated it and then I loved it. Summary: 4 Stars
This is a book written backwards, because we have two characters who crudely get it on right away and then move away from that, as they evolve and regress back to the romantic part, that should have been the beginning. It's hard to tell whether a woman really wrote this book or a man. The writing seems to be a man's style in it's thinking. This is a romance book, but not at first. At first it's an erotic book and will turn many people off for many chapters. The book starts off with two people disillusioned with love and coupling.
Mark thinks only of lust with women, since he knew no love under his mother and the author's writing reflects this. The words are crude, he's crude and the writing is crude. As Mark and Passion fall in love, the writing style changes and more prose enter into the writing style and the crude language is dropped. I found this a fascinating way to tell a story about going from lust to love. The plot is thin, but does keep you engaged, wanting to know if he'll ever find the letter. This simple plot does hold up, when this one letter involves so many lives potentially being ruined. There is also the part where he learns to let a woman love him as his mother never did. This is something people can relate to.
I look forward to the next book, "Patience", but I think the same crude language will be in it from reading the sneak peek. Most romance authors don't get away with this time and time again. Anne Rice is one of the very few. We shall see, but I can't see Matthew and Patience talking like this! Matthew, the brother of Mark is an interesting character. He's so calm and yet when his mother is out of place, he thinks nothing of hitting her. It doesn't seem to go with his character, then again, men years ago who inherited everything, can do as they please with the female members of a family to correct them. I also found the book copies many, with the vicar's daughter expanding her horizons in bed. The best telling of a story like this is "The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie". Read that book if you want erotic written well and woven into a growing romance. Still this was good and stick with it and don't get grossed out at first. This one you have to stick with to get the reward.
Most romance authors use metaphors for the sexual aspects in a book, but this author goes right for the words. I also found some of the technical aspects of their coupling to be things only a man would think of. Either this is one inventive woman author or a man is writing under a woman's name. I would never have thought of some of the technical aspects of their coupling in a million years... which makes me wonder if it's possible or a male writer's fantasy. That and the constant harping on Mark's large sized male parts, which was a turn off. Also them engaging in all of this in so public a place, seems not reasonable in the way it's done. Anyone could have walked in on them and they seem irresponsible to do this with children roaming around.
Something about this book screamed at me that a man wrote it under a woman's name, but I could be very wrong on that. There is also the part where some people may think Mark and Passion are perverts and never get over that in the book. The aspects of religion woven into this and what is right and what is wrong is also fascinating. Another thing Anne Rice does to perfection. This was less than perfect, but it was still interesting. However, I can see this book getting 1 star, because Mark acts like a stalking pervert. I did not think the author would turn me around and have me liking Mark. His constant talking during intimate scenes is a turn off. I'm not sure women would want to make love to Mark... still having me think a man wrote this book! A few women will be totally turned off at the crude words at first when reading this. So be warned!
Book Review: Awesome Summary: 5 Stars
This is my favorite romance! As far as I am concerned, this was written perfectly. I also am waiting for Patience to be released! May 29, 2009 UPDATE: Still LOVE this book! I have been through so many books since my first review of Passion and still haven't found one better! What I didn't mention in my first review was the language used in telling this story. So, if you get offended easily by language and sex, don't bother. But it is your loss. I have not ever felt a connection to a story as I have with Passion. While some people are giving up on the next book in the series, Patience, I am not. I don't care how long I have to wait, Matthew will be worth it.
Book Review: Awesome Book Summary: 5 Stars
I normally never comment on novels I have read, but this book actually made me cry. It is a beautiful love story between the most unselfish hero and heroine I have ever read about. Lisa Valdez captures the meaning of love in this novel. I can not wait to read the story between Patience and Matthew.
Book Review: Be still my heart. Summary: 5 Stars
Be still my heart.
Wow. What a book. This book holds the number 78 slot on AAR's top 100 list. It deserves a ranking closer to the top 10! If I was a bettin' woman, next year when they repoll the top 100, I would bet this one will move up significantly. I know I can't do this review justice, but here's my attempt.
Okay, here we have a tortured hero and a sweet and kind heroine, who is very likable, and Ms. Valdez made this so much more than a bunch of romps, which, there are a bunch. While this book is steamy, and liberally uses the f word, it is a fantastic book. I was very emotionally involved, and I had to ask myself two questions about why. Was it 1- Because Passion (I'm not to keen on that name) lived for the moment and I lived that through her as something I would never ever do, or 2- that lust turned into love unexpectedly between two people that just wanted to satisfy their own needs, but whose souls belonged together, like a hunger each other could only ever satisfy. Maybe it's both, but I just loved this book.
Because they choose to keep their affair and identity (except for their first name) hidden, both are astonished when they learn who the other is and their connections. I wondered just how the author was going to make a HEA for them, but she did. There are some heartfelt moments as love is professed and put off limits. Some of the passages, you will want to read again and again. Lisa Valdez, even though she only has ONE book in print, she is an auto buy for me. And for any romance reader, this book is a MUST.
Passion's sister, Patience will have a book of her own with Mark's brother, Matt as the hero. The release date on Barnes and Noble and My Book Garden have it listed as January 6, 2009, I hope that is correct. There was a scene in the back of Passion that pulled you right into their story. You can bet I will be at Borders that week to get it!
Book Review: Beautifully sensous Summary: 5 Stars
Passion has it all- beautiful prose, likable characters, a believable story line of human conflict, and extraordinary sensuality.
