In 1970 as a college student in Chicago, I saw the premier of "Patton" starring George C. Scott in a large theater. I remember that most of the audience were older guys, World War II types I guessed. After Patton (Scott) gave the opening speech about how "We're going to grease the treads of our tanks with their living guts", I was amazed when the older guys stood and cheered!!
D'Este's book is a very interesting, readable, and sympathetic biography of General Patton. The author desribes the general as very courageous and human, providing many interesting stories. If a common soldier stood up to Patton's insults and rage, Patton quietly accepted the reply. The man respected courage and I imagine it took courage to ask a four star general for an apology! Like all great generals, George Patton led from the front. Patton showed courage and inspired soldiers to do the same.
