Book Review: "Arrakis, the planet known as Dune, is forever his place."

Ever since I was 13 and I read the first three Dune books, the leap between Dune and Dune Messiah always bothered me. 12 or 13 years were unaccounted for and in them we missed out on the battle to quell an entire universe, how Paul moves from being a hero with a heavy burden on his shoulders to a dark, brutal character unable to survive under the brunt of what is being done in his name.
Paul of Dune takes up kind of right where the original Dune novel stopped. Paul has just won Arrakis but that is only the beginning. There are Houses to be brought in line and planets to be nigh-on destroyed. People flock to Paul and others hate him, some lying about both sides and switching when it is politically convenient. With some fairly interesting flashbacks to Leto and Paul, which I liked, Paul of Dune shows the change in how Paul transitions from the man at the end of Dune to the wreck of a man we see at the beginning of Dune Messiah.
Not all was great with this novel. Two things really stood out. The prose that Frank Herbert used was beautiful and poetic. Although it would bug me sometimes in how thoughts jumped around without any kind of transition at all, the man could write an awe-inspiring sentence/paragraph/page. Brian Herbert and Kevin Anderson don't have that ability. They write smoothly transitioning fiction, cinematic in scope, without wholly interesting sentence structure, which isn't necessarily a bad thing it is just different. It took me a while to embrace that change years ago but I did in realizing no one will ever be Frank Herbert so why demand another person write in the same style? That's just absurd to me. I suspect the 1-star reviews floating around here are probably from people unable to get over the style change and they have an axe to grind over it.
The other thing that stood out is the fact that we already know how it ends. We know the Paul in Dune Messiah, so hoping for Paul to rid himself of his darkening self just doesn't happen. We KNOW it doesn't happen. We also know he SURVIVES after a pivotal event in the book. That kind of took the wind out of the sails at the end but it was still really interesting to watch Paul changing with almost every page turned.
All in all, I was pleased with this book. I'd give it 3 3/4 stars, but since I can't do that it is 4.
