Book Reviews of Peace Like a RiverBook Review: sweet, harsh, moving, true Summary: 4 Stars
I just finished this book and was shocked from the beginning at the beauty of the writing. From Swede's love of the Old West, to Jeremiah's faith, to Reuben's truthful, albeit naive perspective, I loved it all. This book is about the kind of people I know. People who desperately want to do what is right, who love their God, who are humble and often poor. I grew up among these types. Enger displays a huge repertoire of knowledge, from Old West heroes and outlaws, to political figures to surprising biblical understanding. If I were his mother, I would know I did something good. Thank you for this book, I WILL read it again.
Book Review: this book touched my heart... perhaps even my soul Summary: 5 Stars
Love it or hate it? Only you will know, if you decide to read it. I strongly recommend this book for its lyrical writing, humor, insights, and ultimately, the way it drew me in and wove a compelling fabric that snared my heart, made me care about the characters and their story as it unfolded. Perhaps those not touched by tragedy or redemption in their own lives cannot relate to such a story, but I found it irresistible... it touched my heart and provided much food for thought, long after the book was finished. I'm not particularly "Christian", but miracles can and do happen, and I've witnessed several in my life. As the main character often says, "Make of it what you will."
Book Review: thoroughly engaging, thought provoking and beautiful Summary: 4 Stars
There is little to add but I wanted to say that this is in my top 10 favourites. Every once in a while one happens upon a really special book and this is one of those. I picked it up on holiday and was transported to another world... Highly recommended.
