Book Reviews of Pet on Duty

Book Review: One of My Favorites
Summary: 5 Stars

This was the manga that broke my yaoi virginity. I'm glad it did because these days not often do I run across a yaoi manga that I wish to recommend to anyone who reads yaoi.
The story centers around Mizuki and Toru. Mizuki is Koichi's younger brother and ends up moving in with Koichi when Mizuki again loses his job. Only Mizuki is unaware of the fact that his brother lives in a dorm for single employees. Mizuki ends up sharing the room with his brother, Sugano, and Toru. Mizuki is dubbed a pet of sorts and quickly becomes a part of the dorm's life and is loved by everyone in the dorm. Mizuki then begins to fall in love with Toru and vies for his attention alone by doing every little task he can to help him. This backfires slightly as every time Miuki tries to over-help it seems to cause a problem of some sort. But Toru who was distant and consumed by his job warms up to Mizuki eventually and starts to care for him. They start to enter a relationship when Mizuki, who has been striving for independence from the beginning moves out of the dorm. He is determined to prove he won't be a burden any longer and is trying to make it easier for him and Toru to have a relationship. This of course backfires horribly. In the end though, things eventually work out for our boys and everything is capped off with a lovely(although censored) sex scene. There are also a couple short extras at the end of the book.
This yaoi isn't loaded with sex but what it lacks in sex is made up for plenty by other things. It's sweet, funny, and actually has a unique plot. The artwork is fabulous and the overall quality is high. All of the main characters we focus on are pretty(which isn't something I can say for all yaoi) and masculine at the same time(except for Mizuki who admittedly has more of a feminine quality). Almost all of the panels are filled with details and none of them are lacking in background. It's also drawn nicely where the panels aren't just plain old boxes and blend together nicely with unique angles.
On a whole this story is one every yaoi fan should have as you'll find yourself reading it again and again.

Book Review: One of the Better Yaoi I've read
Summary: 5 Stars

I was a little worried that I wouldn't like this manga because although I like yaoi, I'm not a fan of the strict seme/uke roles and the occasional borderline rape that seems common place. Pet on Duty is extremely tasteful thoug. Mizuki is adorable and sweet and has a fairly believable personality. Toru is the standard seme, aloof and stoic (accept with his uke, of course). One thing that is interesting about Toru is that he doesn't have the standard aggression that one often sees from the seme, and in fact it is Mizuki who is the one pushing for something more physical. The sex scenes are brief and as someone else has stated most of the manga is devoted to the plot. It makes the more sexual scenes that much better because they aren't happening every other page. The drawing is absolutely wonderful. As someone who has only read a handful of yaoi, I could tell each of the characters apart, remember their names, and almost always tell who was speaking (this is not the case in other mangas). If you're looking for a smutfest this is maybe not the book for you, but if you're a fan of other shounen ai/yaoi mangas like FAKE and prefer quality, Pet on Duty is the manga for you.

Book Review: Put your trust in this title...it's a fun read!
Summary: 5 Stars

I like to indulge in yaoi from time-to-time, but usually I find it too campy or bland (or predictable) in plot to digest to the point of annoyance. So when I wanted to get a good boy's love manga into my library I surfed the reviews and decided to place my bet on this one. This was a pleasant surprise and purchase. The main character is extremely 'uke' in some areas and surprisingly NOT in others. I think other readers will find the few personality twists in this book enjoyably addictive. The rest of the cast in this book are funny to read about with Mizuki and Toru being a bittersweet combination. Even the guys from the upper-level dorms are hilarious in the few bits that they're shown involving owning cats in the place.

The story is dramatic, but still keeps a lot of light-hearted moments in it so that the relationship builds up realistically enough (given the fact that it's only one volume long). So you won't be investing a ton of time or money into this read. It's a fast-paced, cute, and hot little manga that's now being passed around to my other friends with "TWO THUMBS UP!!" as the overall response when returned. And my fellow readers are individuals who are into titles with strong character archetypes (Wallflower, Skip Beat, Princess Resurrection, etc...). In short, I think a great deal of individuals looking for a good yaoi manga to indulge in will find themselves satiated by PET ON DUTY.

Book Review: Simply delightful! I enjoy this one alot.
Summary: 5 Stars

This one is a pure delight. Mizuki is one cute and sweet uke. Forced to live in hiding in his brother's company dormitory, the young Mizuki finds himself cared for by 5 gorgeous guys, who considers him their "cat pet". Mizuki quickly assumes the role, cleaning after the guys to repay them for their kindness while searching for a job. All the little scenes here as Mizuki assumes the "maid" role are so cute.

Mizuki finds himself falling for Toru, one of the 4 guys who share the same 4th floor of the dorm with his brother. Toru, with his own unhappy secret, is closed-up and has difficulty getting along with anyone but he soon opens up to the earnest Mizuki. I love their confrontation and slowly evolving sweet love. 7 years separate them and their physique is of course the tall gorgeous seme and cute uke but they complement each other so nicely.

The interaction among the guys is well done, the story line amusing, light and "angsy". The other 3 guys' and Mizuki's own brother's care for and protectiveness over Mizuki, bordering on possessiveness, is comical but sometimes the romantic side of me wish these guys will give the "poor" couple a break. When Mizuki gets a job at a "girlie" bar, the consequences are just hilarious as the guys rush to his side.

As for the artwork, it is gorgeous with pages after pages of beautiful guys. There may only be a few pages of explicit sex but believe me you won't miss the sex in this one.

Book Review: Sooo Cute
