Book Review: "Special Kay's" Novel Not-So-Special

If you're in the mood for decent Phantom fanfiction written by a sexually repressed Englishwoman, then you can't do better than this book. Luckily, I borrowed this book from a friend, and thus was spared having to spend $40 on it. If you want to read about Monsieur le Fantom, go with the original, Leroux.
My biggest problem with Phantom was that Kay apparently felt the need to demonize every female character in the book in order to make Erik into some kind of corpse-esque sex god. Seriously, every single character, male or female (except for Raoul) wants to get in Erik's pants, whether they are aware of it or not. I'll grant Kay's Erik one thing-- the man has some chutzpah. But that's not enough to redeem him in this Leroux phan's eyes. If you still insist on reading the book, do yourself a favor and stop after Erik leaves Persia. After that part, Kay drones on and on and on about building the Opera Garnier, and the siege of 1870, yadda yadda yadda. Basically, that whole section is Kay showing off her mad researching skills, and failing to impress. Who gives a crap? I can research stuff, too. It's called "the library." Or "Google."
But do stop reading before Christine makes her grand entrance. Spare yourself the pain that is the "Counterpoint." I used to be a Leroux Christine-basher. Having read Kay, however, I've developed a newfound respect for the girl. At least Leroux's Christine has a backbone. Kay's Christine is a characterless little thing. And Erik's character goes downhill during the Counterpoint as well. And don't even get me started on Erik's raging Oedipus complex, or the morphine addiction.
The only character I liked in this book was Raoul. That man deserves a medal for all the crap he puts up with in Kay's book.
To conclude: you can't beat the original. You can try, Ms. Special Kay, but you won't succeed. I'll take Leroux any day of the week.
