Book Review: Cute Books, But Not What I Expected for Phonic Readers

I bought this set for my 4 1/2 year old son who is just starting to read because he loves Diego. That said, I was really disappointed in this product. This set is advertised as phonic readers with flash cards for parents. As someone who taught for 13 years, mostly kindergarten, first, and second grade, I expected books with CVC words (consonant, vowel, consonant words like cat, can, mud, etc.) and simple sight words (words that can not be sounded out, but must be memorized like "the", "as","is"). Instead the "short a" book (book 1 in the phonics set) starts out with the text "Can Baby Jaguar climb to the top of the mountain? Let's climb with him and Mommy Jaguar! Grab the zip cord and clap your hands. Clap, clap, clap!" Although this first page has a lot of short a words this is not the typical text for a beginning phonetic reader. Also the flash cards were equally disappointing. I expected them to be for the words in the stories that a child typically couldn't sound out, but would need to know to be able to read the story. Instead the flash cards just seem to be random words from the stories such as "fish", "mud", "log", etc. - all words a child could sound out and doesn't need to memorize.
Although these are cute stories that are true to the Diego storyline, save your money if you are looking for good phonetic readers and flash card sets. This is not the set. Take it from a teacher who has taught beginning readers. I will be returning this set and looking for something else for my son that will help him with his reading skills and make him feel successful as a reader.
