Pickin' Up the Pieces: The Heart and Soul of Country Rock Pioneer Richie Furay
This book was was not what I had expected, and I found in it far more than I feel the author intended to express. It was a rock n' Roll story, beginning with his early years, the Buffalo Springfield, Poco, and all of his subsequent musical endeavors. The book goes in to his feelings of being taken advantage of, and not being understood or appreciated by his piers, or the people he had to deal with in the music industry. Richie paints a clear picture of his one driving desire for success, and it was always just out of his reach. How he worked with a single focus of success and stardom and it continued to elude him. It played on his self esteem and affected his marriage. He seemed to lose hope and in his insecurity was easily shown a way into fundamental religion as an answer, a way out of his self doubt.
He traded his creativity for a set fundamentalist life. Maybe it brought him less stress, and some happiness, and this book clearly shows the changes.
