Book Review: "Drawing is what you see of the the world, truly see."

Hollis Woods is an artistic child who tells the story of her troubled life through her drawings. She was abandoned at birth, and has lived with a series of foster families her whole life. When troubles arise, instead of facing them, she runs away, which has earned her the reputation of a problem child. Despite her tough exterior and stubborn independence, all she's ever wanted is a real family. Josie Cahill, a retired art teacher, is Hollis's latest foster parent. She understands and communicates with Hollis in a way that no one else had, and through their relationship, Hollis learns what it's like to feel needed.
Patricia Reilly Giff tells this story through an interesting series of descriptive flashbacks. The chapters alternate between Hollis's current life with Josie, and reflections on drawings Hollis drew of her time spent with the Regen family. Although it's not a particularly fast paced book, Giff inserts enough suspenseful clues throughout the story to keep the reader guessing about a secret from Hollis' past. This author seems to have the ability to think like a kid, referring to one social worker as "the mustard lady".
This book will appeal mostly to girls, ages 10-16, but anyone who is artistically minded or has a connection with the foster care system will enjoy "Pictures of Hollis Woods".
