Book Reviews of Piecemeal JuneBook Review: Brain worms Summary: 4 Stars
Have you ever wanted to visit a place where human flesh is converted into a series of sweaty tinker toys existing for the sole purpose of soaking up disease and satisfying the perverse desires of strangers? Are you curious about the masturbatory habits of inter-dimensional crab mutants? Are you interested in building yourself a lover, but don't know what to expect? If the answers to any of these questions are yes, Piecemeal June is the answer to all your prayers.
In this deranged and darkly comic adventure, Jordan Krall will wriggle deep inside your brain like a horny slug and have his way with your subconscious. If that sounds pleasant to you, I highly recommend jumping into the next swirling poop vortex that you come across and ride the wave of masticated flesh, feces and bodily fluids all the way to Om-Am. Krall paints pictures in viscera and sputum as he tells this story of unrequited love, fortune tellers, sleazy pornographers, mutants, piecemeal sex slaves, and foot fetishism. Amidst the swirling torrents of debauchery stands a sad, profoundly average yet thoughtful foot fetishist named Kevin who works at a pet store, lives above a porn shop, and loves his tarot reading feline. Piecemeal June is kind of a cross between "The Pearl" (John Steinbeck) and the end of "Society" (Brian Yuzna).
Fans of Carlton Mellick III and the Bizarro genre in general will not be disappointed in this lovingly crafted and deeply personal first novel. Eraserhead Press has found another budding visionary to forward their plans to warp the minds of the world. I understand that there will be several additional works taking place in the world of Om-Am. I can't wait to see what Mr. Krall has in store.
Book Review: Cross Dimensional Love Summary: 5 Stars
Piecemeal June is a fantastic story of cross dimensional love that you will want to have around for multiple readings; and with its fast pace and short length requires little time commitment.
In this book Krall creates vivid images and intense ambiance that suck you into the story.
Some of my favorite components are the crab monsters working for gangsters and a tarot card reading cat.
My only complaint with the book is that it is so compact many scenes left me wanting more- so much so that I had to get my hands on Squid Pulp Blues.
Buy it- its worth it
Book Review: Disgustingly Pleasurable Summary: 5 Stars
Short, sick, and satisfying, Piecemeal June is Jordan Krall's first book, and boy is it fun. Krall's prose will amuse, disgust, and maybe even arouse the reader as his protagonist assembles and subsequently falls in love with a living sex doll, comes face to face with giant crab monsters, and runs into Simon, the God of Whores; all in under 100 pages. Despite the low page count, the story doesn't feel rushed, on the contrary, it's just the right length. Great if you're in the mood for a short read.
Whether you're a newcomer to bizarro fiction or an old convert, this book should keep you entertained and excite you about Krall's future projects. This guy's a real talent and if you've got a taste for the weird and the right sense of humor (sick!), you'll be hard-pressed not to enjoy Piecemeal June.
Book Review: For a good time, call Jordan Krall Summary: 5 Stars
Piecemeal June is a no-holds-barred romp through the viscera of the bizarre. If you're new to bizarro fiction, then PJ is a pretty amazing gateway drug. The plot is well-paced, the characters lovingly fleshed out, all of which add up to a read that's just out-and-out fun. Some of the descriptions stick in your brain for days (a sex doll with banana-flavored toe jam, anyone?) The book has everything--twisted netherworlders, cats, porn--I could go on and on!
Book Review: Good book Summary: 5 Stars
Undoubtedly weird, but this book has a great amount of intelligence and heart in it as well. Krall has given his characters and concepts depth that a lot of Bizarro books lack.
The writing is great and the gross out moments are perfect:
"...the colon itself was filled with sores that were on the verge of busting. I wonder what disease will sneak out. I could use another one."
Unusual enough to actually BE gross and so well put that it has a romantic edge.
