Book Reviews of Piecemeal JuneBook Review: Making love stories gross again Summary: 5 Stars
Jordan Krall's Piecemeal June is a kaleidoscope of hot wet perversion. But at the end of the day it's actually a romance. This is a hard balancing act, but Krall pulls it off. He packs every scene with gaudy sex toys, flowing bodily fluids, and bloody body parts, but Piecemeal June always has a heart.
The story involves Kevin, your average nice guy who's also a bit of a pervert. His cat starts bringing him sweaty latex body parts, and before he knows it, Kevin has built himself a living sex doll that calls herself June. But as usual, it's not that simple. There are a few shady pornographers out to reclaim June for themselves, and Kevin's a dead man if he gets in their way. Too bad he doesn't know they're coming.
Then there's the parallel dimension of perverted body-horror. That's where June came from, sort of. And the leader of that world still loves June... sort of. So when he finds out she's alive (sort of) he joins the chase to get her back. All these weird and perverted characters are trying to catch up to Kevin and June, and of course Kevin couldn't be more oblivious. He's the average Joe who's caught up in a tangled web that spans dimensions.
Piecemeal June isn't as polished as Krall's later work, but it's still an impressive debut from one of bizarro's most deviant weirdos. Along with his classic pulp sensibilities, Jordan Krall has a strong mind for describing tastes and smells. The result is a story that's foul yet sweet, stomach-churning yet heartwarming. You'll be simultaneously attracted and repulsed
Book Review: Piecemeal June - Bizarre Summary: 4 Stars
In Piecemeal June, Jordan Krall takes you on a head trip through a place where the darker side of our world intersects with what could (frightenley) be described as the lighter side of an extremely more twisted and bizarre world.
This story is filled with unique characters, including: Kevin, a slacker who lives in a tiny apartment above a porn shop with an exceptionally self-aware cat. Max Alexander, a burnt-out pornographer who is un-phased by even the most degrading of sexual acts. Macchu, Bacchu and Frank, three crab-like creatures from the bizarre other world of sex and violence who help Max with his `special' projects, and Simon, the God of Whores, who is well respected in his twisted bizarre world, but still holds a place in his heart for a porn star from our world, named June.
When Kevin's cat starts to bring random body parts into Kevin's apartment, he isn't quite sure what to make of it until he starts to put the pieces together and the newly formed sex doll comes to life. From there, a bizarre love story unfolds between Kevin and his piecemeal sex doll, who was created for a `love' of a different kind.
Book Review: Poetic scatology, beautiful megasleeze Summary: 5 Stars
Jordan Krall's Piecemeal June is a fun, heartfelt Bizarro read. It tells the story of Kevin, a bored young man living above a porno store who finds satisfaction and eventually love with a sex doll named June. The problem? June is the property of the overlord of a strange world of perversity and he wants her back. He sends mutant crab assassins to retrieve her, but Kevin won't let anything get in the way of his love. The Pygmallion story is turned upside down and sideways in the most interesting of ways. It's gross, it's sick, it's splatstick fun and meaningful romance in the same package. I totally recommend this.
Book Review: Porn-o-rama Summary: 4 Stars
Jordan Krall's debut novella, PIECEMEAL JUNE, is an extremely entertaining, suspenseful read. Think Edward Lee crossed with Elmore Leonard and a healthy dash of, I don't know, maybe the movie MANNEQUIN, and you'll know what to expect. But Krall goes beyond those expectations, adding his unique plot twists and a wild sense of imagination, injecting a whole fantasy world rife with odd conditions (like a woman with some kind of swirling sewer on her back) and sexually frenzied denizens. This is the ideal book for those looking for a quickly paced read full of bizarro writing that makes it far more interesting than most genre offerings. My only criticism of it would be an ending that seemed a little abrupt, but that may be because I wanted to keep reading.
Book Review: Sticky, Gooey, Icky and FUN!! Summary: 4 Stars
Where to begin a review of Piecemeal June? First, I must say that this one is definitely NOT for the squeamish. I am not squeamish. This book MADE me squeamish. I will not give away any more of the plot than has already been given away in both the synopsis and other reviews, but I'll say this: if gross is your thing, you will absolutely love Mr. Krall's revolting, amusing and completely bizarro tale. A very entertaining story from an amazingly talented new author. I'm almost afraid to see what Krall does next.
Almost.
