I loved the premise of this book, as it makes for one of the most compelling post-apocalyptic reads I've found in a while. Not all of the characters were fully realized. If Cam hadn't been the most fleshed out and likable member of the cast, I don't think I'd have finished this book. He's down but not out. Ruth isn't terribly likable, but she's an individual set apart from the others. Most everyone else was generic, and we never learned enough about Sawyer. The writing itself shifted between very good and nearly incomprehensible. Dialogue and transitions were particularly bad, but the world building, pacing, and description were good enough to make up for any discrepancies.
I'm very much looking forward to Plague War, as I think Cam and Ruth will make a good team.
