Book Reviews of Playing With FireBook Review: Absolutely Funny! Summary: 5 Stars
Gena Showalter has done it again!
Intriguing story-line, hot-hero, spunky-heroine, and other characters that just give you cramps from laughing! Definitely a must read!
Book Review: Amazing Book! Great read. Summary: 5 Stars
This was an amazingly hilarious paranormal romance!! I loved the dialogue and the way that the herione reacted and interacted with others. She says the things that we are all thinking. The hero is super hot and the interactino between the two of them is downright laugh out loud funny. This is a must read for any fan of the genre. Sit back, be prepared to laugh and have a good time.I can not wait to see what is next for this series.
Book Review: Another Must Read book by Gena Showalter Summary: 4 Stars
After the Atlantis Series I was hooked on Gena's writing. This is a different type of setting, but the setting and subject matter are very compelling. I love all the wonderful interplay between the characters. Working on reading another one of Gena's book now.
Book Review: Better action than romance Summary: 2 Stars
I so wanted to love this book. I like both romance novels and comic books, so this seemed like a sure thing. It starts out strong. Our heroine, Belle Jamison, coffee wench, is funny, charming, self-deprecating, and spunky. The story - regular nice girl accidentally develops superpowers - is nothing new, but it's presented in a very engaging fashion. But then the hero appears, and herein lies my problem with the book.
We're told numerous times that Rome Masters is sexy, but it seems solely based on his clothes (he's wearing all black, after all) and the fact that he has a smoldering blue gaze. Oh, and he's dangerous. He also deliberately keeps things from Belle, ties her up, holds her prisoner for her own "safety," and is generally insensitive to her feelings. The story is told entirely in Belle's first-person perspective, and that doesn't help. The reasons behind most of Rome's actions are never all that clear and he subsequently comes off as a jerk. There's certainly no excuse for him to spring his gorgeous but nasty ex-wife and cloyingly cute kid on Belle under the guise of taking her to get help from a "friend." A tiny bit of concern for her feelings would have been nice. It would have taken him all of ten seconds to throw in "I should warn you, it's my ex-wife" before taking her there.
I found myself rolling my eyes quite a bit when Belle would suddenly completely change gears because he'd give her a smoldering look. Yes, finding someone you find attractive is supposed to make you all gushy, but I was never quite able to grasp what she saw in him apart from his supposed sexiness. As a humorous action/adventure book, it works quite well. But it's supposed to be a romance novel, and I just wasn't feeling the romance.
Book Review: Blah Summary: 2 Stars
The book, for me, started out badly. Belle's interactions with her customers were painful. Belle was incompetent, but then seemed surprised when her customers were upset. And the customers were unrealistically rude.
Belle's whole attitude bothered me. She was concerned about her father and being able to provide for him, but couldn't keep a job for more than a couple weeks. And her reasoning for her inability to hold down a job - dissatisfaction with her life - was flimsy.
I just couldn't make myself care for Belle, and while the storyline was ok, it didn't make up for my annoyance with Belle.
