Book Reviews of Playing for PizzaBook Review: Another snore..... Summary: 2 Stars
Grisham goes to Italy, gets his publisher to pay for the trip, deducts the expense from his taxes, and writes about his favourite pastime. Unless you love football - and even if you do, stay away from this travelogue.
What happened to the Grisham of "the Firm' and "A Time to Kill". I have been a Grishham fan since the start of his career, and eagerly awaited each novel, but either he's tired of it, employs students to write his stuff and lends his name, or he's just plain lost his touch.
The last several books have been terrible. While I applaud his efforts in trying to expose a wrong in "the Innocent Man" (2006), I tried, time and again, to plod through it, and finally gave up.
He can still get by on his reputation, and that's why I gave him another chance with this one - it was a New York Times bestseller as well, the cover said, so I took an chance and I'm sorry I did.
I feel sorry for him, actually - he is probably sick and tired of writing - at least that's the impression I get lately, and is probably being pressured by the publishers to produce. But better to write nothing at all and be remembered for the excellent work he has produced in the past than to pass into obscurity with this drivel.
Then again - what does he care - he's laughing all the way to the bank and probably laughing at us for buying this crap too.
Book Review: Average at best Summary: 2 Stars
I read this book without knowing much about it and am still surprised this was written by an accomplished author. It is amateur writing, something I would expect from a college student in a writing class. Character development is poor, story is predictable and overall the book was not interesting. It was an easy read but I couldn't recommend this book to anyone.
Book Review: Big Disappointment Summary: 1 Stars
Why did Grisham write this shallow piece of trash? To stereotype Italians? NFL football players? Cheerleaders? I enjoyed his other novels which he researched endlessly. The only research he did for this one was that he treated himself to a trip to Italy and sampled the food. There is no redeeming moral, plot or dialogue to see in this farce. At least it was a quick read. The quarterback hero has no morals and neither does the story.
Book Review: Cute, light-hearted read Summary: 4 Stars
This is not a typical John Grisham story and it is a very quick and light read, not the serious courtroom/boardroom dramas we're used to reading. I loved the parts about Italy and the descriptions of all the wonderful food and wine. Rick, the main character has a self-deprecating sense of humor and there are some good moments of comradery between the American and Italian football players. This would have been the perfect plot for a sweet romance, but Rick's love interest was written in a casual manner and just seemed to be thrown in as an afterthought.
Book Review: Deserves far more than 3 stars Summary: 5 Stars
I got this book because when was younger I would always see my grandfather reading John grisham books and this is one that cought my attention. Needless to say this was my first John grisham and I really enjoyed it. The book is a easy read and its about a subject I enjoy being football. I thought that this book was worth more tgan just te average 3 stars because its a fun nice little book to read. If you like football or John grisham then youll like this book
