Book Reviews of Pocket Ref

Book Review: For the folks who have everything!
Summary: 5 Stars

This pocket reference is a perfect gift for someone who has everything! Especially for those who need to know the answers to every question. I couldn't believe so much information could be packed into such a small book. We had trouble coming up with subjects that weren't addressed!

Book Review: Full of fun reference trivia, but also full of typos
Summary: 3 Stars

I have the newest edition (3rd Edition, 6th Printing: April 2003).

POCKET REF is a fun little book that could keep a youngster (and plenty of adults!) busy for hours. It offers hundreds of pages on interesting and sometimes obscure topics, from plumbing to weather, and from chemistry to first aid. It might also be handy for on-the-job use (by engineers and others needing access to technical data), although that latter application may be tempered somewhat by the typos. I cannot speak to whether numbers are for the most part correct, but the high incidence of grammatical typos, including missing letters, is not confidence-inspiring. The Knots & Bends section is particularly egregious. There are also many instances of question marks apparently used as placeholders, presumably for information to be inserted prior to publication; these give the book an unfinished feel (see pp.66,290,291).

I live in Colorado and evidently so does the publisher. I will transmit my findings in hopes of cleaning up a possible 4th Edition.

UPDATE
September 28
I sent the typos/corrections to the publisher at the end of June and while no Errata was posted on the Web site, I see that a 4th Edition *is* being published with "Over 96 new pages and thousands of updates!" Hope they got mine!

Book Review: Good Little Guide
Summary: 5 Stars

My Dad saw that I had this guide and wanted his own. He has fallen in love with it. Although he doesn't use it for practical reasons everyday, he does like to look up random information.

Book Review: Good reference material
Summary: 5 Stars

If you are ever in need of some quick knowledge this book can probably help you.
I call it the pocket wikipedia.
It contains lots of random information that is mostly accurate.
I carry it around all the time and normally find use for it when I am brainstorming or need to look up some information without turning on the computer.

This is a work in progress style book.
The facts inside are probably correct or are at least close enough.
The only area I have heard there being potential problems is with estimated strengths of joints and such.

Summation, for $10 this book is a steal.

Book Review: Great Book
Summary: 5 Stars

This book is ABSOLUTELY the best book to have. It has sooooo much information in it that is very usefull. I think every college student to have one. Actually i think every kid should have one to, plenty of stuff to help them out thru high school. BUY IT!!!
