Book Reviews of Point of ImpactBook Review: A rare treat for action thriller fans Summary: 5 Stars
I first picked up Point of Impact second hand from my girlfriend, who had never read it. I was a fan of Tom Clancy for the technical aspects of his books, but his prose, his sometimes paper thin characters, and under-edited morality tales often left me flat. Stephen Hunter showed me that you could write an exciting thriller, filled with action, that has good characterization, and doesn't resort to threatening the destruction of the world (or at least the US) in order to build tension. Hunter's prose is uncluttered and direct, but his details are lavish. I understand from some shooter friends of mine that some of the technical details in the book are a bit of a stretch (like welding a firing pin...), but they were for the most part impressed with the technical accuracy of the book. I liked this book so much, that I have become a hard core Hunter fan. If you like action thrillers, you probably will too. This book WAS slated to become the movie "Shooter" in 2001, with Tommy Lee Jones as Bob Lee. However, talks on the project broke down and I do not know the status of it at this time. I will be there opening weekend when it does.
Book Review: A rollercoaster ride of a novel Summary: 5 Stars
Now, that's what I call a thriller. I have read Tom Clancy novels and thrown them across the room unfinished in disgust at the turgid writing style, appalling characterisation and laughably half-baked philosophising. But this... First, it is well written and plotted. Second, one actually likes the hero, who is honourable, tough, resourceful and intelligent. And it has a visceral appeal that keeps you turning the pages. I lent the book to four people, each of whom loved it (though one was furious with me as he got so engrossed in it that he missed half a football game with his favourite team rather than put it down.)
Book Review: A true classic. Summary: 5 Stars
I see that this is going to get lost among all the other 10's and glowing reviews, but I have to say it anyway. Hopefully Mr. Hunter looks over these every now and again for encouragement, and I want nothing more than to provide it. This is simply the best, by a long shot, suspense/action/thriller I have ever read. Ever. Mr. Hunter, I eagerly await your next book. I finally found and read all the others, I need more!
Book Review: A very fast-pace imaginative suspence-thriller. Summary: 5 Stars
Piont of impact is the kind of book that is fun to read and at the same time is very imaginative and suspenceful. The details and the movie-like quality make it worth reading alone not to leave out that it has a very good and belivable plot, with ver bad bad guys.
Book Review: A very satifyingly read!!! Summary: 5 Stars
This one is actually the best work of Hunter. His first novel(?) The Master Sniper turned out to be flawed with unripened scenario and writing tech. But not this one as well as its two sequels, DIRTY WHITE BOYS and BLACK LIGHT. All three had proved that the real mature Hunter is finally arrived! Readers who could enjoy this book greatly should also check out and purchase from Amazon.com several other books fromin the same genre: WHITE STAR by James Thayer--like Bob Lee Swagger's nickname, the hero in W/S was named WHITE STAR by his deadly enemy; SHADOW OVER BABYLON by David Mason(an English weapry expert), there is a great sniper in this book too; SNIPER'S MOON by Carson Stroud, a V/N veteran sniper turned N.Y. cop; POINT OF IMPACT, by Jack Curtis. Plus the old THE MASTER SNIPER, I think the readers would feel quite satsified.
