robert harris shifts gear nimbly from his forte of the spy world of enimga and the back to the future gambit of fatherland to write forcibly about the vanished world of the roman empire and how its keystone city of pomepii was lost after a volvano erupted. using the wit and wisdom we know him well for he creates a wholly believable picture of how rome was a flawed empire. the volcano that swept its lavae and pumice into pompeii can be seen as a metaphor. if rome is the united states mr harris suggests then what fate awaits the united states? here we move into a realm not explored before, that of the symbolic nature of the volcano. a less clever writer might labour this parable and steer us clumsily by force majeure toward the tragedy of the attacks by fundamentalists on new york and other bastions of the american dream. mr harris is too subtle for that and lets us come to that conclusion at our own speed. his aqueduct that brings water and life to pompeii is akin it seems to the television that nurtures the american dream, so to speak. that is how i saw the novel. but others might scoff and say it is just a cracking good read. i agree on that! this book should be entered for the booker competition and never mind so called highbrow literature. more please mr harris!
