Book Review: So tedious I gave up after 80 pages

This novel won a prestigious UK literary award (the Booker prize). Demonstrating that the best way to impress literary critics is to write a novel about literary critics. As an average reader I found the novel tedious and irritating. After 80 pages the realisation that I could be reading any number of books with far greater enjoyment compelled me to give up on it. The text is interspersed with mock Victorian poetry and quotes from fairy tales which interrupt what little narrative flow there is. The characters are stereotypically shallow and don't engage the reader's interest. Literary research hardly seems a gripping subject for a novel and Byatt proves the point. All in all a vastly overrated, puffed up disappointment.
