Book Review: A Chess Book for All Seasons
Summary: 5 Stars
This is an excellent book. If you are just beginning, you may find most of the 600 problems too hard. If you're an advanced player, you may find them too easy. If you're somewhere in between, you will almost certainly benefit from the book. Though there are some end-game problems, most of them are middle-game, which is my weak area. Ray Cheng encourages you to work out your own answer (black to move -- what? -- where? -- why?) and then consult his answers. I find his suggestions to be insightful and his reasons persuasive. If you happen to play chess on-line, the book is perfectly adapted to that, since on-line you tend to forget what your plan was, so each turn confronts you in effect with a new board -- which is exactly what Cheng does. I suspect that if you play in real time, you find the book just as helpful -- it would encourage you to stand back every so often and take a fresh look at the board. I am a fan.
