Book Reviews of Practical Programming for Strength Training

Book Review: A Better Way: Get Big, Get 1940s Big
Summary: 2 Stars

This is a well written reference for the strength coach, rather than a practical manual for the trainee. [Of the two versions, the first edition is much better because it is shorter, smaller and it has the Basic Strength Standards (pp. 271-276), which have been deleted from the second edition. I was Sooooooo disappointed by that!]
incidentally, neither edition has a bibliography or further reading list.

But for me, there is a better way. If you want to gain brawn and might, then read the 1940s issues of such bodybuilding magazines as Peary Rader's "IronMan" and Bob Hoffman's "Strength & Health". The decade 1941-1950 truly was the golden era of Physical Culture: John Grimek (Mr America 1940/1941), Steve Reeves (Mr America 1947), Reg Park (Mr Britain 1949) to name but three.

It's all been downhill since then. In the mid-1950s, trainees started taking anabolics and the strength training programs from that time and onwards are unwittingly tainted and skewed by that.

Instead, read the 1940s muscle mags and "Get Big, Get 1940s Big".
