Book Review: A heart for Israel

This book is an urgent call for Christians to support Israel and the Jewish people in these difficult times and provides a framework on how to do this effectively. Relevant verses from scripture and prayer templates round off each chapter. It consists of 3 parts: Praying for spiritual understanding, for the descendants of Abraham, and for the fullness of God's promises.
In part one, the author explains what it means to be a watcher, provides 7 reasons to stand with Israel and then looks at 4 great shepherds of Israel: Moses, Solomon, Nehemiah and Asaph. Next, he discusses a further 4 prophets who carried the burden: Joel, Isaiah, Jeremiah and Daniel. Thus he explains the character and qualities of heart needed to be an intercessor.
Part two, Praying For The Descendants of Abraham, deals with the descendants of Abraham's wives Hagar, Sarah and Keturah in turn. Goll states emphatically that the Arabs are not the enemy but that spiritual forces are. True Christians must pray for all the children of Abraham in accordance with God's purposes.
In this regard, recent genetic research shows that Jews are more closely related to groups in the north of the Fertile Crescent like Kurds and Armenians, than to their Arab neighbours. "Jerusalem: A City Of Destiny" is the first chapter of part three - it discusses the many names of the holy city and mentions the special day of prayer for the peace of Jerusalem which is held annually on the first Sunday in October, near the date of Yom Kippur. The wording of the resolution for this call to payer is included. The author explains what it really means to pray for the peace of Jerusalem.
This section also deals with a dark chapter in American history - President Roosevelt's silence in the face of the Shoah and accounts of anti-Semitism in the State Department. Strange how some things do not change, as even today that department holds Israel to a different standard than other nations.
Titled "Praying For The Fulfillment of Aliyah," chapter 8 explores the ingathering of Jews to the land of Israel. This includes a brief history of the lead-up to and the rebirth of Israel in 1948 and then looks at Epicenter regarding the two Regatherings of Israel.
The last chapter: God's Roadmap For Israel's Future looks at the significance of 4 cities in the Holy Land and at the prophecies in Zecharia 12, Romans 11 and Isaiah 53. Since this book does not contain any maps, I would like to refer the interested reader to the book The Mountains Of Israel by Norma Archbold, which deals more extensively with the matter of land and contains many maps.
An Appendix explains the festival of Purim and provides the dates until 2020 for the Cry Prayer Focus, which is an annual fast of intercession by Christians for the Jewish people worldwide. The book includes notes arranged by chapter, a glossary, a list of Christian ministries involved in supporting Israel and the Jewish people, and a bibliography. The book concludes with an index.
