Book Review: "Psychological Thriller"? Welllllllll...

That's what a couple of the blurbs on the cover and inner page of the book itself say. There's just one problem. Cornwell hooked me when it was MYSTERIES she wrote. Plus, for the past few books she's been focusing too much on the dysfunctional nature of the Scarpetta family and their associates. Like how niece Lucy has turned out after starting as an engaging "auntie's girl". How Pete Marino has degenerated from a rough-edged Sipowicz-type cop whose foibles were tolerated by Scarpetta because she valued him as a colleague and cherished him as a friend. Now she sees him as an outright boor who she wishes there was some effective way to get out of her life. This book devotes so much time to the agonies of its protagonists that often the actual case that the story is supposed to be about gets lost in the shuffle. Oh yeah, it's about this serial killer who suffered a somewhat Norman Bates-type childhood. Psycho criminals are nothing new to fiction, their complexity and cleverness is why it takes the whole book for them to get caught. But now we've also got the fragile psychology of the investigators as yet another obstacle to the investigation. Yeah yeah, I know--what do I expect, simplistic gumshoes along the Mike Hammer lines? It's just that the problem with anti-heroes is that it's tough to root for them.
