Book Review: Like the honey and the garlic mixed together. . .

I am a big Toriphile and so was eagerly waiting to read this newest biography of Tori. However, I was somewhat disappinted. Basically this book is just a run down of all of Tori's CDs, starting with Y KANT TORI READ. Jacobs describes her gradual climb to fame - although radio time seems to always elusively pass her by, no matter how ardent her fans are - and then explores each CD in turn. Sure, he has many quotes from Tori and from people who have been associated with her in some way, but, to me, it wasn't as engaging as it could have been. Perhaps the problem is that I read TORI AMOS: PIECE BY PIECE last summer; a book which was done by Ann Powers with Tori herself. Reading this biography by Jacobs just doens't seem a patch on that earlier work. I personally didn't feel as though I was learning anything new about Tori. I even wondered if Jacobs's interpretations of her songs were always 'correct'.
Having said that, the interpretations of the songs certainly made me compare to how I felt when I listened to her work, and reading this made me want to go back to certain albums to try and listen to them with new ears. Jacobs also did not always make out that Tori was some godlike person who could do no wrong, musically. This is very much in his favour - nobody is perfect, yet biographies can sometimes make the focus of the biography just one long exploration of how great someone is.
Personally, I think TORI AMOS: PIECE BY PIECE is far more interesting _ even people who may not appreciate her music could find something in there to interest them. Jacobs's biography is probably just for die hard fans who long for yet another item devoted to their red-haired goddess!!
