Book Reviews of Proof: A PlayBook Review: Deservedly won the Pulitzer and Tony Summary: 5 Stars
I have read David Auburn's play, and saw it on Broadway with Jennifer Jason Leigh in the lead. Even though the performance I saw was less than stellar, the brilliance of the script shone through. Auburn has written four compelling characters, each of which is haunted in some way, most obviously the title character, haunted both by the ghost of her father and the inheritance of both his brilliance and possible madness. This is a tightly written, emotionally driven four-character drama, full of insight, humor, intelligence, and romance. A must-read for actors, dramaturgs, and lovers of good theatre.
Book Review: Dramatic genius Summary: 4 Stars
"Proof" is a taut examination of an uncentered young woman dealing with the death of her father, a math genius gone mad in his later years. She also faces the question of her own sanity and potential for genius, while juggling her well-intentioned sister's patronizing advice and the romantic advances of one of her father's protegés. The dialogue hits no false notes and the scenes timeshift from past to present in the service of the story and without stagey pretentiousness. It's wonderful writing and an intimate play to perform.
Book Review: Funny and moving Summary: 5 Stars
This is a wonderful play. I have seen it twice on Broadway and am now very eager for a chance to read it myself. It is an incredably funny but at the same time very real and moving story about a 25 year old girl who has perhaps inherated some of her mathematition father's genius and perhaps some of his madness. It is about how she and her older sister dealt differantly with their father's instability, and how they deal differantly with grief over his death. It is about a student of the father who is going through his notebooks after his death, and it is a mystery about the actual author of an amazing proff he finds. You know what, it's just really really good. I don't know what else to say but that. :)
Book Review: Great To Read, Great To See Summary: 5 Stars
The story of Proof somehow jumped at me like no other play had before. I have seen the play twice. I didn't see it in New York, but I saw the first regional production of the play at the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta. This produciton starred Susan Pourfar as Catherine. Susan Pourfar breathed so much life into this role that now when I read it, the show takes on new meaning. The story is new and REAL. Proof tells the story of the life of Catherine and the people most near her. Buy this book you won't regret it!
Book Review: Great play, but cliched when it comes to depicting mental illness Summary: 4 Stars
I really liked this play. It was a good, solid play. I especially liked how they made a play about math entertaining. It's got enought math for someone who likes math to enjoy it, but it would also be very entertaining for someone who doesn't like math, because it focuses more on the relationship of the father and the daughter.
However, I was disappointed in how cliched the play depicts mental illness. I was surprised that something with such unoriginal elements won a pulitzer.
