Book Reviews of Proven Guilty (The Dresden Files, Book 8)Book Review: Excellent series Summary: 5 StarsContinue to enjoy the books. Author offers new insights and interesting concepts about the world of magic with each new book.
Book Review: Fast-paced and utterly enjoyable! Summary: 5 StarsThe latest book in the Dresden series is a real treat. Dresden receives a warning that black magic is heading for his hometown, and he heads out to stop it. On his way, though, he gets sidetracked into helping a friend's daughter who has a ton of problems of her own. In typical Dresden fashion, he spreads himself too thin, tries to help too many people, gets beat up almost as much as Bruce Willis in a Die Hard movie -- and he does it all with a grin on his face and a snappy one-liner that usually relates to a horror or SF movie.
The plot's a tad obvious (I called several twists by halfway through the book), and some of the dialog with Murphy is annoyingly awkward, but Harry has the heart and soul of a hero, and he's a fantastic character to join on a good romp through dark magic and the weird Nevernever. Some have compared this series to the Anita Blake series, but Harry is far more likable, heroic, and mythic. He's just a lot more enjoyable to be around than Anita ever has been.
One cool -- and totally unexpected -- surprise.... This book contains one of the best expressions of Christian faith I've read in a fiction novel ever. Don't be fooled and don't let that turn you off if you're not a Christian. This is not a "Christian" novel -- those are notoriously poorly written -- and Dresden, with a fallen angel swimming around in his head, never claims to be a Christian himself. But some of the characters in this book are Christians, and I appreciated seeing them portrayed realistically and with respect to their faith.
If you've never read a Dresden book, you could pick this one up with little problem. The cast of characters may feel a little overwhelming since they've been building from the previous seven books, but they're distinct in their own rights, and Butcher does a good job recapping each when they first show up. Overall, another fantastic entry in a wonderful series of books.
Book Review: Outstanding read Summary: 4 StarsI don't know where to place this series as the only some what similar series is Simon R Green's 'Nightside" which is not all that close.
Nicely done complex plot with a number of issues being resolved. Very well done characters including an arrogant vampire and a cute chickie. Lots of complex plotting and politics between the fay courts and the White Council as well.
Overall and outstanding read! I strongly recommend reading at least a couple of other books in the series as it will make more sense and they are all very good reads.
Book Review: First Time Reader and I'm hooked Summary: 5 StarsCan't wait for the next book (White Night). This was the first novel that I've read from Jim Butcher and I can say that it was surprising, intriguing and entertaining.
I'm more of a techie sci-fi kind of guy who really likes space ships and lasers and such, but sometimes I come across a fantasy series that just rocks and this is one of them. Butcher makes Dresden feel like he fits in our world, as it is today, not a fantasy world only reachable by flying horses with bird heads and broom sticks.
Since I read this book I've already read the 7th book in the series (Dead Beat)and really liked that book as well.
This is a bloody, nightmarish, grown up world with problems from social and political human issues to Vampire, Troll and other nasty things that go 'bump in the night' causing death, murder, and mayhem.
Book Review: Love the series! Summary: 4 StarsI was in no hurry to start the series until I heard about the show on the Sci Fi Channel. I bought the first book, was hooked and bought 2-8. The series keeps getting better and better, while not becoming lame or boring like a certain fantasy series.
The wife and sone are hooked. However, because I'm a fast reader and I bought the books, I get first crack, then my wife and my son comes last. :D
The wife is planning to read this book all day today. She wants to wait for White Night to come out in paperback, but I think I'm gonna get the hardcover now.
I'd love to see the last 2 books become a movie, adhering to the book, unlike the show.
