Book Reviews of Puerto Rican CookeryBook Review: Monotonous Regularity Summary: 1 StarsNever have I enjoyed a cookbook less than this contrived concoction of unappetizing recipes. Can you believe a Puerto Rican cookbook without reference to annatto, that aromatic red/orange seed so prevalent in PR cuisine? And only one recipe for asopao, a dish indigenous to the island boasting so many luscious variations.
It became a joke after realizing one recipe looked very much like the rest. I returned this book as quickly as I was able.

Book Review: The Ultimate Source of Comida Criolla Summary: 5 StarsLong held as one of Puerto Rico's most influential cookbooks, this title was translated into English mostly for third and fourth generation folks living in "el Norte" and its peripheral markets. Puerto Rican cuisine is an amalgamation of Spanish, African and Taino influences and while it has its similarities with other Caribbean islands, it holds its own with a perky and savory personality. Puerto Rican Cookery shows it at its best.
This cookbook includes my entire childhood in food - from the traditions my great grandmother instilled in the family in El Barrio, to growing up in my grandmother's house in Puerto to the Christmas feasts in "el Campo."
The recipes have been contemporized because nobody has the time to soak beans overnight and cook for hours anymore, but the taste has not been compromised. That makes this book priceless. You can pick any recipe, duplicate it and make it smell like Mami's house!
Book Review: Buy this book! Summary: 5 StarsI'm Jamaican but I love Puerto Rican food, I guess it's because Jamaican and Puerto Rican cooking is pretty similar I guess. There are so many recipes in this book and it's very easy to follow. I first saw this book at my Aunt-in-law's home (She's from P.R) and TiTi Julie told me if I want to learn how to make Arroz con Gandules that I should buy this book and I did. Buy this book, you won'tbe sorry!
Book Review: Puerto Rican Cookery Summary: 5 StarsI have that book in spanish, because I am from Puerto Rico and my daughter just got married and she wanted the book but she likes it better in English and believe it or not the price was cheaper thru Amazon than in Puerto Rico.
Thank you,
Carmen
Book Review: PR Cookery....a case of health. Summary: 5 StarsDeep fried?...lol...the person complaining about this as a health issue obviously doesn't know what Puerto Rican cooking is then. Ive been eating my mom's cooking recipes from this book for years, and no one in my immediate family is overweight or obese or unhealthy. Sure things are fried but they are fried at very high heat which keeps the oil from setting in. Plus, Puerto Ricans don't die from fried foods like typical Americans because its different. They actually perform physical labor which uses up those calories, use olive and canola oil instead of your regular vegetable oil, and eat a balanced diet full of locally grown vegetables, fruits, and raised meat. If this person is judging this book becuase of their personal health concerns, then they probably need to judge your typical American cook books and see how unhealthy they are.
