Book Reviews of Pumpkin MoonshineBook Review: As always... Summary: 5 Stars
As always, Tasha Tudor's work stands out. It is beautiful, stunning, comforting and unforgettable. Both the text and the artwork will remain with you and your children for a lifetime.
Book Review: Charming, delightfully old-fashioned Halloween tale Summary: 4 Stars
First published in 1937, Tasha Tudor's "Pumpkin Moonshine" still has a timeless innocence and appeal. It is a delightfully simple story of a little girl on a farm who picks a pumpkin and rolls it downhill to where she can make it into a jack-o-lantern (or a "moonshine," as they apparently called them in New England, way back when...) A simple story made magical with clean storytelling and wonderful art. (ReadThatAgain)
Book Review: Classic, darling Halloween book Summary: 4 Stars
This book is darling. It's is a classic, non-scary Halloween tale with beautiful, timeless illustrations. The simple story is about a little girl picking a pumpkin, rolling it home, chasing it as it goes awry, and making a jack-o-lantern out of it. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because I think the "pumpkin moonshine" title (and some of the other language in the book) is slightly outdated. I didn't realize until the end what a "pumpkin moonshine" was-- it's a jack-o-lantern. I had only associated the word "moonshine" with liquor. If you read it to small children, the book may take a little extra explanation about how the words for things can change over time.
Book Review: Cute Story, Beautiful illustrations Summary: 5 Stars
My 2-year-old loves Halloween. We bought her this book in October to help get her in the mood, and she loves it! The story is very sweet and set in a much simpler time. I love how it took the reader full circle, so children can see where pumpkins come from and how they get to our porch in the form of a "pumpkin moonshine" - with a silly story in the middle about the runaway pumpkin. The illustrations are beautiful. This is our first Tasha Tudor book, but definitely not our last.
Book Review: Delightful for Halloween Summary: 5 Stars
This is a primary book set in pre-1900s Connecticut. The lovely little story could prompt discussion about holiday traditions and life on the farm in the US. The illustrations provide an amusing and exciting crescendo. The teacher may want to use this book around Halloween as a seasonal story about scaring people, which is not a scary book at all. The book could prompt talk about what life in the US was like during earlier periods: When did this story take place? How can you tell? How was Halloween different then?
