Book Review: Excellent Introduction to the World of Tejano Conjunto Music

This book is a compilation of articles about various aspects of tejano conjunto and interviews with several pioneers and legends. "Puro Conjunto" is a good introduction to the people who make this music with particular emphasis on the accordion and bajo sexto used in conjunto groups. Particularly enlightening are the detailed discussions about the interrelation between different yet overlapping classifications of music and songs in South Texas and Northern Mexico, as well as the changes in instruments and styles that have occurred since the emergence of conjunto music in the 1930s. There is a substantial amount of information on the evolution of the accordion and the different types that have been and still are being used. There is also at least one good writeup on the specifics of the bajo sexto (twelve-string guitar).
Due to the age of some of the articles, some of the information is dated. There is some redundancy as the various authors tend to reiterate the same introductory material and reference the same sources, which I believe is due to the sparsity of research available on this topic. It would have been helpful to me to learn more details about the mechanics and techniques of the tololoche (aka upright bass) and its use in early conjunto music, as well as some of the other instruments mentioned.
Overall, I recommend this book to anyone interesting in learning about or getting involved in tejano conjunto music. I also recommend it to anyone who would like to broaden their understanding of music in general or Chicano culture in particular.
P.S. A recommendation for the next edition: I recommend adding historic (i.e 1930-1960) photos of the various performers/groups in addition to the recent photos that appear, as well as photos of album covers where available. I also recommend including a CD with samples of the music and performances mentioned; this would really help expand readers' understanding of the differences in performer styles as well as the similarities and differences between related types of musc discussed. The editors might also wish to include a photo slideshow and video clips of performers from the Tejano Conjunto Festival.
