Book Reviews of Queen of Babble: A Novel

Book Review: 3.5 stars.
Summary: 3 Stars

Elizabeth "Lizzie" Nichols and her entire family are celebrating her college graduation in Michigan. It is there that Lizzie finds out that she has not really graduated after all. Before it is official, Lizzie must write and turn in a senior thesis on "The History of Fashion". That is not a problem though. Lizzie will just write it while she is visiting her boyfriend, Andrew, in England. But from the moment Andrew picks Lizzie up at the airport, Lizzie learns that Andrew is not the dream man she thought he was! The true Andrew is appalling! When Lizzie opens her mouth and gets Andrew in serious hot water, she is totally embarrassed. No one told her that what she told was supposed to be a secret! Besides, everybody knows that Lizzie cannot keep a secret to save her life. Lizzie is stuck in London with no boyfriend and no place to stay until the departure date on her non-refundable ticket. Luckily, Lizzie's best friend and college roommate, Shari Dennis, is in France. Shari is spending the summer in southern France, catering weddings with her boyfriend, Chaz, in a sixteenth century château. Having an open invitation from Shari, Lizzie hopes on a train to Souillac.

Utterly miserable on the train and still hurt by Andrew, Lizzie lets out her grief on the shoulders of the man riding beside her. Jean-Luc de Villiers "Luke" is a total hottie! Being a stranger, Lizzie told everything. After all, she would never see the guy again after she got off the train. Unfortunately for her, she babbled so much that Luke never got a chance to tell her that Shari is his guest at Château Mirac, his father's vineyard estate. Luke is half American and half French. Shari is catering the wedding of Luke's sister. Yes, the Lizzie Broadcasting System (LBS) has done it again!

Dominique, Luke's girlfriend, meets them at the station. It only takes a glance for Lizzie's fashion sense to tell her that Dominique is loaded and believes Lizzie to be beneath her. Not a good omen! As soon as everyone settles in, the LBS strikes again. Now it looks like Luke hates her, the bride is in tears, the future of the vineyard seems to be precarious, and to top it off Andrew shows up!

**** Author Meg Cabot has always been able to create mean characters that readers love to hate, such as Dominique. Yet in this novel, I found Lizzie to be the worst. Lizzie's character is just a bit too unbelievable. I understand that people let secrets slip out often; however, Lizzie's case is outrageous. I quickly grew tired of hearing Lizzie say the same things over and over and over. Other than that, the plot and other cast of characters are wonderful. Luke, Chaz, and Shari often stole the show. The wedding, when it finally happened, was ... unique. All-in-all, a good read, but wait for the paperback. ****
