Book Reviews of Quest for a MaidBook Review: Pretty good Summary: 4 Stars
Good plot, but a bit slow-moving. You don't actually get into the part about The Maid until over halfway through. Great ending though, and I really liked the characters. One complaint is that the glossary is very incomplete. It defines all the obvious Scottish words (aye=yes, isnae=is not) but not many of the more obscure ones. Whenever I came to a word I *had* to look up to know the meaning, it wasn't there. This doesn't really take away from the story itself, though. Zohariel@hotmail.com
Book Review: Quest for a Maid Summary: 5 Stars
Quest for a Maid is about Meg Wright, who lives in Scotland. She lives a normal life, except that her oldest sister, Inge, is a witch. Then one day when Meg is nine years old, she hides under a table and hears Inge kill a king. Nothing will ever be the same again. There is a fight for the throne going on in the country. Then Meg gets betrothed to Davie Spens, and is sent to live with his family to prepare. (The wedding will be in seven years.) When Meg is chosen to journey to Norway to bring the rightful eight-year-old queen back to Scotland to claim the throne, she goes, but with doubts. What will happen when they get to Norway? Will the little queen even want to go back to Scotland?
Book Review: Such a good book... Summary: 5 Stars
This book is utterly incredible. It was one of my very favorites when I was younger and is a unique, refreshing, and incredible mix of fiction and fact, history and magic and love. So many elements were combined in an intoxicating way...utterly magical. The scottish brogue used is very unique and entertaining, the characters are fun and often believable. The relationships and emotions from character to character are tangible. Overall a highly, highly recommended read. Well worth buying, my entire family (of 5 sisters (1 is too young to read it)) all love this book. It's a family favorite of a family that loves to read. Worth buying.
Book Review: Wonderful! Summary: 5 Stars
What a fabulous book this is! I read it out loud to my eleven-year-old daughter and 54-year old live-in love, and we were all riveted. We stayed up till eleven to finish it the night before my daughter went to camp! Great, complex characters (Inge, Meg, Sir Patrick Spens), gorgeous writing, thrilling plot--the big sorcery scene in the first chapter, the witch trial, the storm, the final struggle. I especially like the way Hendry suggests the medieval mind.
Book Review: timeless good read Summary: 5 Stars
I think I first read Quest for a Maid when I was still in gradeschool. I am about to go off to college, and I still find pleasure in reading it again once in a while. This is one of those books that stays on the shelf and gets so creased along the binding that you can no longer decipher the title. This is very well written historical fiction with action, adventure, danger, and a pinch of romance, but nothing mushy. A great read for girls of all ages.
