Book Review: More disappointment from California.

This book comes from the stable of the California group who are now trumpeting the message that Nondual awareness is the easily available state of consciousness which gives you access to the deepest states of consciousness available or imaginable.
It is a charming book, readable and accessible, and making it all sound simple. Like all these books, it makes the mistake of contrasting just two states of consciousness: the normal everyday consciousness of the crowd, and the Nondual state. The important states of consciousness which I know as the Centaur, the Subtle and the Causal are simply not mentioned.
The simplistic nature of some of the thinking here is exemplified in the following quote: "There are three different ways in which we can receive what people are communicating to us: positive listening, negative listening and pure listening." (p.109) Anyone interested in the psychology of communication would know that this is woefully inadequate, and excludes whole swathes of other kinds of listening.
There is sometimes a curious and I think misleading choice of words. "Buddhas don't get excited, and our aim in working with the nondual is to become a buddha... [experiencing] bliss, joy, and love." (p.130) Well, I have to say that anyone who can experience bliss, joy and love without becoming in the least excited seems to me a strange kind of person - someone I would not trust.
Many of these people pay no attention to the Shadow. They never mention the rather obvious fact that our conditioning, our hangups, our neuroses or psychoses, can all get in the way of experiencing nondual awareness or any other truly open state. It is to Fenner's credit that he does mention this issue, albeit very briefly. In Chapter 8 he does acknowledge that people may need to deal with these issues before they can enter into pure unconditioned awareness. It is a pity that he does not consider any of the normal forms of therapy, instead mentioning seven rather esoteric programmes, one of which at least is not therapy at all.
Then at the end the author goes off on another tack altogether, and gives in an appendix a complete set of rules for good communication based on the work of Marshall Rosenberg and Fernando Flores. This seemed to me rather simplistic and not nearly as sophisticated as the work of Mary Parker Follett, for example. It is on a much lower level than any part of the rest of the book.
There is an excellent bibliography and some good recommendations for other books. There is an index.
