Book Review: 'Some mistakes you never stop paying for'

The haunting lines of Roy Hobbs spoken by Robert Redford in 'The Natural,' (THE GREATEST SPORTS MOVIE EVER MADE,) are an apt description of John Rain, the anti-hero/centerpiece of Barry Eisler's first effort about the burned out assassin living in Tokyo.
OK. Here's the bad news. It's the same plot told a thousand times over like Clint Eastwood's "The Man With No Name," "Shane" and even John Wayne's Ethan Edwards in "The Searchers" from 1956.
Here's the good news. It's brilliant. Eisler writes a very classy novel. I found it seamless, and while Rain is being turned inside out by his handler, Benny, and tracked down by the bent CIA agent Holtzer, and falls in love with Midori, all in Japanese with the dialect, jazz music and travelogue, it hangs together like a great complex painting. Like a Turner, the colors just seem to slip into one another.
It has a little bit of Michael Crow's Luther Ewing in it, Robert Crais' Joe Pike, Parker's Hawk, and Lee Childs' Jack Reacher. Disenfranchised. Literate. Mad as hell. All with lethal skills.
I'm not a reviewer who tells the plot. There are already a dozen descriptions of the plot. Suffice to say that Eisler tells the tale in such a way, fashion and manner that brings you along. And although by contemporary Christian-Judaic standards John Rain may not be a model citizen (and yeah, the bodies do pile up), you start liking him and rooting for him. Don't start this if you have to take the kids to hockey practice, sing in the Christmas Choir or go shopping with SWMBO.
Definitely worth your time and effort to become a Barry Eisler fan. stars. Larry Scantlebury
