Book Review: Ramona will appeal to girls and boys of a wide age range
Summary: 5 Stars
Ramona lives with her parents and older sister in an unnamed town in the American northwest. Despite this she is a very universal child. There is not a great deal of plot in this book. Ramona's family is not well-off; both her parents work and their juggling of work and family life forms a backbone for the story. Ramona is a very ordinary little girl. However, Beverly Cleary has the knack of making the mundane interesting, poignant and sometimes very funny. She addresses many of the issues that are important to children: school, relationships with siblings and parents, fairness, working out one's place in the scheme of things. If this sounds dull, please give Ramona a try and you'll see that it's not. We came to the audio versions by accident some years ago and we all -- two parents, a nine-year-old boy, seven-year-old girl and three-year-old boy -- love Stockard Channing's interpretation of these stories. They have got us through some very long car journeys and sometimes we've stayed in the car for just a while after we arrived just to hear the next bit. Now that's a good story!
