Book Reviews of Rat Bastards: The Life and Times of South Boston's Most Honorable Irish Mobster

Book Review: The disgrace of Southie.
Summary: 1 Stars

It is amazing to see a book so riddled with erroneous information still selling. It is a pure disgrace. I'm sad to say that it just doesn't matter that Shea has fabricated the majority of his memoir. In a recent Boston Globe article, journalist Shelley Murphy found the retired police officer that Shea claims offered him a deal to rat on Whitey and walk away from 20 years in jail. Guess what-the retired officer says, "It just didn't happen!" But still the beat goes on-people do not care. What has happened to America-have we all become idiots.
If I was from Southie I would stand up and call out Shea for his series of misnomers. It would become my Southie responsibility to lead a movement that stops Shea for misleading the readers. Shea is using his Southie roots to steel money from those of us who have always been fascinated by the strength of this fabulous Irish city.
I've read all the Southie books and by far the best one in my opinion is the one we hear nothing about-"A Criminal & an Irishman" by Pat Nee.

Book Review: No honor among liars...
Summary: 1 Stars

Red Shea is a man of honor? Why--because he kept his mouth shut in the slammer? If he'd known Whity Bulger was a rat he'd have talked, that's for sure. And if he's such a stand-up guy for keeping quiet, why is he blabbing now? What is this book but a rat-job? And unlike one of the other Southie ex-Bulgerites, Shea's not giving ANY of his money to the victims' families. Why not? Seems like Kevin Weeks is the one who really has honor here. And Shea probably wrecked a lot more lives in Southie by getting all the kids there addicted to coke and god knows what else. RAT BASTARDS isn't worth the paper it's printed on. Check out BRUTAL, or even Howie Carr's book for an overview of the whole story.

Book Review: loved the book
Summary: 4 Stars

I see some negative reviews, and that is probably from the many RAT [...] out there that have no honor, and can't stand to read about a true stand up guy such as SHEA.

you take a book like this for what it is worth, a true story about a hard life of someone in a hard neighborhood, anyone who has been around these types of people and grew up in similar situation (such as myself) can relate to a book like this ...and in many ways I did .

knowing in my mind the situations he was faced with , and knowing how he must have felt and basically reliving his life through his words

I enjoyed this book, and appreciate that there are still some real guys out there.

not a rat fink such as Whitey Bulger and the rest of his gang, in this day and age where ratting seems to be the thing to do, it was a relief to read a story about someone who accepted who they were and the consequences

Book Review: Didn't Miss a Beat - Thumbs up
Summary: 5 Stars

I typically enjoy memoirs & biographical type of books and this one was no different. The author brought a certain 'edge' to the pages that is seldom found and usually edited prior to finished publication. I found myself rooting for Shea as he provided me a unique 'fly on the wall' perspective. I highly recommend this read - I couldn't put it down.

Book Review: Worst book I ever read
Summary: 1 Stars

All I kept thinking while I tried to read this dumb book was that if every crook who committed a crime and went to jail wrote a book when he got out, we'd have libraries filled with lousy books. But few could be worse than this boring, stupid book. I tried to find one good thing to mention but I couldn't. I wasted my money and time reading this piece of junk. The least I can do is help others save their money. Something's really wrong when a book like this gets published. I'm interested in everything to do with Whitey Bulger, but this book told me nothing I didn't already know. All I know now that I didn't know before is that I'm as big a dope as this guy Shea. He wrote the book. But I was stupid enough to buy it and read it. Don't follow in my footsteps.
