Book Review: A dark, fantastic ride through Hell and Mexico

I really liked reading RealmShift. From start to finish it was easy to read, flowed well and always left me wanting a little more. The chapters are written specifically, ranging from epic, fast paced, demonic fisticuffs to the eerie slowness of character development scenes. I felt Alan's deliberate choices in character focus, development and pacing held the book together very well, making it a very enjoyable read.
The main characters are drawn extremely well. One of the mammoth tasks associated writing about battles between 'good' and 'evil' is character balance. It takes talent to write about Satan as the immeasurably powerful Lord of Hell, and yet be able to personify him to a point where he fits a storyline without overpowering it. Arguably, a lot of the reasoning behind this level playing field is explained through the story, but for the sake of not spoiling anything, I'll just say it was done very well.
Though there are a few chapters which seemed to slowed the frantic pace of the book, they added an eerie sense of calm. Each lapse in frantic action paid volumes in subtle and deliberate character and plot development, which saw the characters fleshed out extremely well. Unnervingly well in some areas... I wouldn't think I'd see a character I'd consider sadistically evil when Satan is involved, but well, he's there with guns on.
RealmShift's deliberate increase and decrease in pacing involves the reader by sharing in the fantastic brawls, then being able to appreciate the moment's of peace, before the tension mounts again and they push on. The final chapters are short and action packed, hurtling towards the crescendo with increasing intensity.
Alan Baxter's RealmShift was a highly entertaining book. From a technical point of view, I believe the book was well very written, and from the perspective of wanting to sit back and really enjoy a book, I was completely satisfied. RealmShift was a great story, filled with many *excellent* action scenes(which may have been given added depth due to Alan's martial arts background) and a few utterly delicious evil characters. Outstanding book.
