Book Review: A First-Rate Escape

Finally, a book that takes morality to heart; good people trying to be better, marriage vows honored, actions measured by their ultimate impact on others rather than self. And Mr. Gould accomplishes this without his characters seeming the slightest bit unusual--though, sadly, characters with this kind of integrity are as difficult to find in today's fiction as are real people in today's world. In a real sense--teleportation skills are kind of a stand in for good old-fashioned integrity, a virtue that can truly transport you where you need to go.
Gould has an effortless style that is a pleasure to read, a knack for getting at the root of a dilemma without unnecessary plot complication and is brilliantly imaginative in his development of the teleportation angle. Only Neal Stephenson is able to get you to buy into fantastic situations as well as Mr. Gould.
Much of the power of Reflex (and its predecessor Jumper) lies in the fact that it taps into a fantasy shared by all who wish that they could instantly take themselves to a better place. Furthermore, you care what happens to Mr. Gould's characters. And, without too much thought, one can analogize any sticky situation to that in which the protagonist finds himself. Rice is trapped; he has a problem to solve and the book is about how he solves it without compromising his integrity.
